Zack Snyder on Watchmen Director's Cut and Sucker Punch

with Rebecca Murray

Zack and Deborah Snyder were ready to relax at the 2009 IESB.net's Wrath of Con party, but before they enjoyed themselves, the Snyders graciously answered a few questions on the 'Watchmen' director's cut, 'Sucker Punch' and 'Guardians of Ga'Hoole.'

Transcript: Zack Snyder on Watchmen Director's Cut and Sucker Punch

Watchmen Director Zack Snyder and Producer Deborah Snyder

I watched the Director's Cut. Why didn't that go out first?

Zack Snyder: "Well, you know, there's a lot of pressure and time and stuff like that. They say the amount of screenings equals the amount of time, blah, blah, blah. So we worked really hard to get it down. But, I mean, you saw it. To me that was..."

The movie.

Zack Snyder: "That's the movie so why didn't that go out? I think it's economics and that's how you do it."

It doesn't make any sense. That was your vision, that's the film that should have gone out. That doesn't make any sense to me. It's not that much longer.

Deborah Snyder: "We give them a lot of credit because the amount of visual effects works and money that they allowed us to get this cut out, because it was the cut that Zack really wanted to get out there... So we're really happy that we could do it."

Zack Snyder: "Yeah, and that it exists and that they've actually put a lot of money behind marketing it and showing it and saying like, 'This is an awesome movie.' That's a big deal."

I love your extra features. Your commentary is...

Zack Snyder: "It's pretty crazy, huh? It's pretty cool."

It's like state of the art. Everyone is going to have to match you from now on.

Zack Snyder: "Yeah, absolutely. And also, my whole thing is that like, look, we're not trying to hide anything. When I make the movie, I'm like, 'Hey guys, this is what I did. Is that cool?' And a lot of people have said to me, 'Wow, you give a lot away.' I'm like, 'It's not a secret, it's just my way of doing it.' There's nothing that I did that no one knows how to do. We just combined it in the way that is Watchmen. I don't know. I'm happy to show it off and it's fun."

What's next - Sucker Punch or Guardians of Ga'Hoole?

Zack Snyder: "Working on Sucker Punch. The girls are awesome. They're training right now."

Deborah Snyder: "We start shooting in September."

Zack Snyder: "We start shooting. We just flew down from Vancouver where we're prepping. It's looking awesome so I'm pretty excited."

Why an all-girl gang?

Zack Snyder: "It's just what it is. There's no rule, like, 'I did it this way because I had to.' It just worked out, and the girls are so great. I'm just excited."

Deborah Snyder: "And after 300 we needed something for the girls."

And Guardians of Ga'Hoole?

Zack Snyder: "And Guardians, you know I work on Guardians every day. Basically I work all day and then I go home, because Australia's on a different clock, so when I get home then I work until about 11 at night on Guardians. And Guardians is going to be awesome. I can't wait to show some footage because it is ridiculously cool."

What is it going to look like? What's the animation look like?

Zack Snyder: "It's like animation-style, every studio has their own thing. You know, like DreamWorks or Pixar, whatever. I feel like what we're doing is just like a whole other thing. It's like photo-real. The owls are - the detail and the sort of the way we're shooting it, it's really beautiful. Every shot is a painting."

How many books is it combining?

Zack Snyder: "I think it's combining the first three."

Deborah Snyder: "First three."

That's a lot to tell.

Zack Snyder: "Yeah. You know, it's mythology and it's stuff that I love so it's fun to do."

And 300 - prequel, sequel, whatever they're talking about, are you going to be involved?

Zack Snyder: "Yeah, absolutely. Frank [Miller] is working and I don't want to mess with Frank. I want to let him do his thing, and when he's ready to show some pictures to us and a story, you know I'd be honored to take a look at it and maybe make it into a movie."
