Zac Efron – 'Mike' in 17 Again

Tell me about working opposite Thomas Lennon and doing all of these scenes where you guys are beating the crap out of each other.

Zac Efron: "You could call it working opposite Thomas Lennon but it really wasn't. We were actually just goofing around for a long time. I mean rehearsals for the film were pretty crazy. We spent hours in parking lots rehearsing with fake lightsabers, then we'd try and do scene work. But we spent so much time trying to make each other laugh, that we wouldn't even stick to what was on the page. It was crazy. It definitely kept things interesting. I made a great friend. He's an amazing guy and a fantastic comedian. It's been a pleasure."

He likes to go and do improv. Did you guys do a lot of that?

Zac Efron: "Yeah, we did. I mean there's some things that we just had to do. There were a couple of things that we couldn't hold in."

Did they make the film?

Zac Efron: "Yeah, there's a couple of things here and there. For the most part, sure, we stuck to the script. Burr [Steers] was on us. But there were a couple of things that we just had to say."

With the fans that you have and the ages that they are, how important is this story to get out about going back and making the right choices?

Zac Efron: "You know there's a line in the movie that Mike, my character, says to his daughter. He says, 'You know when you're young everything feels like the end of the world, but it's not. It's just the beginning.' And, you know, that's the truth. People take, especially teenagers, take their lives way too seriously in high school – especially the social aspects – when it's so not important. I was a total dork in high school."

No you weren't.

Zac Efron: "No, I was. It's nice that everyone says that but the honest to god truth is I was not the coolest kid in high school. And I've been able to live my life and have an amazing time since then. And so you have to remember it's just the beginning. It does not define who you are for the rest of your life."

Good message.

Zac Efron: "Yes, and that's what the movie's about."

The girls over there are screaming. Do you ever get used to that, that people are screaming your name and going crazy whenever you show up at something?

Zac Efron: "No, it's fun. I'm just flattered that they keep showing up. I hope that I don't disappoint. After they find out you're a real person I wonder if some of the mystery's gone."
