Vinnie Jones – 'Mahogany' in Midnight Meat Train

Vinnie Jones: "The movie for me, what I like about it is that it's got story to it. It's a horror movie with story. And I think people are more scared when there's a story going on."

Who do you play?

Vinnie Jones: "I play Mahogany. I play the killer in the movie. But a killer with a purpose. You find out in the movie that I'm killing the people not because he's a nutto or lunatic, because I'm actually feeding people with the bodies."

Interesting. When you read scripts like that, why do you go, 'Oh yeah, I want to play him?'

Vinnie Jones: "Well, obviously Clive Barker. If we get it right it'll be fantastic, you know? And the line between it working and not working is very fine in this business. You've been in this business long enough to know that. And all you can do is come to work, do your best, hope they edit it right, hope the director does his job, and then happy days. And then hope you guys like it."

Are you a fan of horror movies? Is that a genre that you actually pick up and watch on DVD?

Vinnie Jones: "I'm a fan of horror movies with a story, you know? I'm not just into scaring people for the hell of it, cutting heads off, and chopping fingers off with pliers just for the sake of it. But I think, you know, Psycho, all the old movies – Christopher Lee movies and Vincent Price movies – you know, all them sort of movies were fantastic. Hopefully this movie will get us back on track to putting a story to the gore."

And you think we've gone off track with that?

Vinnie Jones: "I do, yeah."

What do you think about this new torture porn that seems to be coming out where all the movies have to torture people, that's the only way to scare people? Why is there even an audience for that?

Vinnie Jones: "Because I guess… I mean, if you look at the audience here, there's thousands of people here and they've got pink hair, blue hair. They've got studs through their noses and everything else, so it takes all. This world is built up of all different sorts and if that's their thing, that's their thing, you know? There's been a market for it over the last three or four years. It's been proven. But I think Midnight Meat Train gets it back on track a little bit, back to the old-fashioned movie that you're genuinely scared because you're following the story."
