Tyler Hoechlin - 'Gerry' in Hall Pass
So I've heard it described it described as a chick flick, and I've seen it and don't think of it as a chick flick. In what way do you think it's a chick flick?
Tyler Hoechlin: "I think it's a chick flick because, you know what? The girls have their own story too. They get to have their fun, so I don't think it's just for the guys. I think once people realize that, that could push it over a little more - a little bit. I can see that."
Are you a huge Farrelly Brothers fan?
Tyler Hoechlin: "Huge Farrelly fan. My gosh, when I got the chance to audition for this I was so excited. I mean, it was such a cool thing. I grew up with them, Dumb and Dumber, There's Something About Mary, all the other countless ones they have. But yeah, that's a dream come true to work on this."
It's a dream come true, but you've got to have them built up in your head. Did they live up to that expectation?
Tyler Hoechlin: "Everything and more. They were actually completely different than I expected."
How did you expect them to be?
Tyler Hoechlin: "I expected...you see their comedies and I expected them to be this very, just kind of like crazy set and everything, and they're the greatest guys. They're so nice. They're so humble you would never know they are who they are. The things they do to help people out on set and bringing people along, I think it's fantastic what they do. I think they're great people."
And they let you do improv?
Tyler Hoechlin: "It's a little scary to do improv for the Farrellys, you know what I'm saying? They've got their thing; they know what works. If my last name was Wilson, first name Owen, maybe I'd have a little more leniency. But I just tried to do a good job for them, so yeah."
And you've also got Teen Wolf.
Tyler Hoechlin: "Yes."
And you're playing a bad werewolf?
Tyler Hoechlin: "Yeah, he's a little bit of a mystery. He's kind of a...you kind of keep guessing about him the whole first season, which is very fun to play. It's very fun not to play one thing. You kind of get to toy with everybody a little bit. So that comes out June 5th. We premiere after the Movie Awards on MTV, and I'm really excited about it."
Great spot.
Tyler Hoechlin: "Great spot. Yeah, so we've got three more weeks of production and then we're..."
So that'll wrap up the whole first season?
Tyler Hoechlin: "Whole first season will be in the can in about three or four weeks. Yeah."
How do they do your transformation? Is it pure CGI?
Tyler Hoechlin: "No, actually we're doing as much as we can without CGI. We're going to do a lot of everything with makeup, and our stunt team is amazing. We do a lot of stunts without having to use rigs and all that stuff. So I think people are going to be blown away when they see what we've been able to do. The makeup's fantastic. The guy who does our makeup is nominated for an Academy Award this weekend. Awesome."
Can't get much better than that.
Tyler Hoechlin: "Right? It's been a great shoot and it's been a lot of fun. Hopefully people will enjoy it."
I heard the tone is very different from the movies.
Tyler Hoechlin: "Very different. Definitely not Teen Wolf of Michael J Fox, yeah. We're going a lot darker and be very... We're trying to do our own thing and be original and try to take our own take on it. And I think our creator and writer Jeff Davis has done a great job doing that. He's the same guy who created Criminal Minds and so it's just a very dark, smart kind of sexy show."
