Tom Cavanagh - 'Ranger Smith' in Yogi Bear

So it is different in a 3D movie than it would have been in a 2D movie? Did they do anything different to you?

Tom Cavanagh: "Yeah, yeah. Instead of flattening you out every day with a steamroller, you're allowed to just go like yourself. It's awesome - much less pain."

Were the cameras different? Were they more in your face?

Tom Cavanagh: "Oh my gosh. The cameras literally, because they're 3D... Here's what 3D is, quick crash course, 3D is two cameras shooting at once. You know why? Two eyes. Simple as that. But the cameras themselves for the technology, they weigh like 14 tons. And so instead of just like picking up your camera, they have to be on these huge cranes. So you've got watch your head when you're shooting in 3D."

Exactly. So you can't do anything off the cuff?

Tom Cavanagh: "Well we have a director who is light on his feet. He was basically, 'Let the actors do anything they want,' because there was nothing he couldn't handle. Eric Brevig, genius."

So you did a lot of improv?

Tom Cavanagh: "Well we were allowed to but we didn't have to because, not to use that old cliche, but it was already on the page. Just try to serve what's on the page."

So Yogi Bear is such a famous character and people still love him so much. Why is that?

Tom Cavanagh: "Because I think there's something somewhat universally appealing to anybody - a bear or a man or anyone - getting hit by a pie in the face. I think there's something about a pie in the face that stands the test of time. And so here we are trying to take advantage of that."

Okay so what were you actually opposite when you're trying to talk to a bear that's not there? What were you actually doing?

Tom Cavanagh: "I'm actually trying to talk to a bear that's not there."

Was there a tennis ball or anything there?

Tom Cavanagh: "Exactly right. In the big world of high technology, the green tennis ball on a t-stand."

Why isn't there something better than that by now?

Tom Cavanagh: "You know why? It aint broke. I think that's it."

Is this something that's going to appeal to the whole family or one where the parents are going to sit there going, 'Oh my god, I'm at a Yogi movie...'?

Tom Cavanagh: "Well, we hope it's going to appeal... We hope we don't get the, 'Oh god, I'm at a Yogi movie.' But here's the thing. I've seen it already at a screening with parents and children, and the parents were kind of laughing. Because, you know why? The pie in the face."
