Writer/Director Todd Phillips - The Hangover Part 2
Ed Helms tells me that you throw a chicken into a scene and it's automatically funny.
Todd Phillips: "Did he?
Yeah. Is there an animal that you threw into this one and it made it automatically funny?
Todd Phillips: "Well, no, I never thought of it like that. But there is a monkey in this one who has a very key part in the film. I know it sounds ridiculous, but he has a very key role."
After you do a tiger and a chicken, you do a monkey? What is that?
Todd Phillips: "I don't know what that is. That's a good point. I didn't even think of it like that. But the monkey has a much more key role than either of those two did in the first Hangover."
Is he more dramatic?
Todd Phillips: "More dramatic acting, and he goes through a little bit more of a character arc."
How nice was it to get those guys back together again and just go for it?
Todd Phillips: "It was great. I mean, on day one it was like we had never left. We just started shooting again and it just came together so much easier than even the first one, which came together pretty easily. But we just get into this groove and it comes together just like butter."
And I would imagine the studio says to do pretty much whatever you want at this point.
Todd Phillips: "Well, they're excited about it and they trust us, so we were kind of unleashed. And we were also on the other side of the world filming so there's a little bit of freedom just in that."
The Hangover broke records for R-rated movies so what is this one going to do? How do you live up to that when you've set the bar so high?
Todd Phillips: "I think that regardless of box office, which The Hangover 1 was such a big deal, we can't really hold it up to that. I mean it would be great if it did well or better but it's really about the movie. I think the movie really holds up to the first one. I think people that doubt sequels can be as good or better are going to be very surprised."
So do you already have a number 3 in mind?
Todd Phillips: "I don't, but we've talked about it for fun."
You have to do a trilogy.
Todd Phillips: "It might be."
