Tobin Bell – 'Jigsaw' in the Saw Movies
Will you ever be tired of the Saw movies?
Tobin Bell: "Not as long as we can create some degree of delicacy and intelligence amidst the mayhem."
But how do you guarantee that? Doing it for the fourth time, how do you guarantee audiences are going to be just as satisfied with what you do in this one as the first three?
Tobin Bell: "Well you can't because there's no guarantees. What do I do to try and make it happen? I wrestle with every moment and every scene, and talk to Darren [Lynn Bousman]. We try to create something special that resonates. You know, there are other people taking care of special effects and things of that kind. I try and take care of what I have some degree of control over which is to try and bring some humanity to this guy."
Is there anything that still surprises you about the character? Are you still learning new things about him?
Tobin Bell: "Oh no, unquestionably. Because when I get a new script, it makes me ask questions about why does he say that and what has he been doing the previous three days or four days before this scene took place. And then all of a sudden you realize, 'Oh my god, this guy… I know what motivates him on that level.' Things that I've never really thought of before. Maybe I thought of this corner of it, but I haven't thought about this and this and this. So there's always new things."
Darren was saying that it was because of you that he came back to this one, that you talked him into it saying everybody was returning. Is that true?
Tobin Bell: "You mean for Saw IV?
He said you personally talked him into coming back for Saw IV.
Tobin Bell: "Well I don't know if I talked Darren into coming back, but I know I talked to a number of different people about getting him back. And those are the people who made the decisions."
