Shantel VanSanten – 'Lori' in The Final Destination
I heard you're a scaredy-cat. Are you?Shantel VanSanten: "Yes, I'm totally afraid."
What are you doing in a horror movie?
Shantel VanSanten: "I think it was like one of those, 'I'm going to conquer my fears so I'm going to throw myself in a movie and learn about exactly what goes into the gory aspects of things.' But I am. I don't think I'll probably see another scary movie after this."
Does it help being behind the scenes and seeing how things are going?
Shantel VanSanten: "It does, but like my mind works in crazy ways so when I watch a movie I still think that part of it could be real. Or, I'll go to sleep and I'll have nightmares about it."
Do you have a really horrible death scene in this, without giving everything away?
Shantel VanSanten: "I have a few, maybe. There's premonitions and in every premonition, everybody dies. So I have quite a few really gory…like on an escalator. It's brutal. You're never going to want to get on an escalator."
Everybody on this press line is talking about your death.
Shantel VanSanten: "Oh good. The first time I saw it, I literally vomited. They showed it to me in the ADR and like I hurled. And it was me – and I obviously know I'm alive and I'm okay. But I'm watching it and I'm like, 'This is disgusting.' So hopefully everybody will enjoy it."
How did you prepare yourself mentally to do that?
Shantel VanSanten: "You know, there was no mental preparation. I thought like, 'Okay, I'm going to sit in my room and I'm going to try and figure out what it would feel like.' And, really, when you throw yourself into that situation and I'm three stories up in a real mall holding onto Bobby's hand, I just lost it. I was like, 'What if I never get married? What if I were to die and then I'd never have kids?' It's crazy, like the pure adrenaline that you get when you do big action sequences like that."
Well does it help having David Ellis who came from a stuntman background there?
Shantel VanSanten: "Yeah. I always felt safe. You know what I mean? But there's still like that pure adrenaline that you get that's like the what if? part of your brain. But David always made sure that we were safe. He has 30 years or more experience in the business, so we were never too afraid. It was always like, 'I'm so bad-ass.'"
Other than the 3-D, what sets this one apart from the other Final Destinations?
Shantel VanSanten: "Just bigger deaths. The 3-D aspect obviously heightens everything, but every death is such a big ordeal. They're not like tiny little things. They're like on a huge, grand, theatrical scale to entertain everybody."
And you also have Something Wicked?
Shantel VanSanten: "Yeah, and I have another movie at the end of the year called You and I that I shot in Russia. Busy, busy. I was in Russia for five months. And I'm on One Tree Hill with [Robert] Buckley. I don't know if you saw him pass by. He's amazing. We're like the new series regulars for season seven. So I like to keep pretty busy."
Any more horror movies in your future?
Shantel VanSanten: "No, not yet. I'm hoping that I don't because it's definitely freaky. Burt I'm really grateful to be a part of the franchise and everything. It was a really great opportunity."
