Amanda Crew ('Felicia') in Sex Drive

She is not the typical romantic comedy girl.

Amanda Crew: "She is not."

Tell me about her.

Amanda Crew: "Well, because she's not your pretty girl next door that… You know usually in the teen comedies it's the pretty girl next door, not much going on underneath. You know, the guy is supposed to fall in love with her and the audience is supposed to love her. And what really drew me to this character is that she has a lot of layers. She's spunky. She's one of the guys. She says weird things at weird times, and she's awkward and it's awesome."

How much of that could you relate to – saying weird things at weird times?

Amanda Crew: "I have verbal diarrhea. I am on special right now. I'm just trying not to say anything that's going to embarrass my parents right now. I'm in a dress, it's got to be a lady."

This is a roadtrip comedy. Have you done any weird roadtrips in your life?

Amanda Crew: "No. You know everyone's been asking that because obviously we're doing a roadtrip and all of us are just like, 'Hmmm…' I think I should just make up a story about something crazy. Like I went on this roadtrip to Texas and I picked up this hitchhiker. Turned out it was my long lost cousin and we had a baby together."

That was very good off the spur of the moment.

Amanda Crew: "No, it's because it's all true."

Are you a fan of teen romantic comedies?

Amanda Crew: "Yes, who isn't? Sean [Anders'] goal with this was to try to do a throwback to the old John Hughes films, and I started watching a bunch of those and they are awesome! Who doesn't love a teen romantic comedy? We can all relate to it."

When you're going to a movie yourself, is that the kind of movie you go see?

Amanda Crew: "I definitely enjoy comedies more than you always have to go to the action ones when you go on a date. You're like, 'Oh, I totally love this movie.' You're falling asleep. No, I like those movies but usually comedies are the first movies that I go to."

Did you stick to the script in this or did you go off of it?

Amanda Crew: "We definitely would do our first takes on script and then Sean was really cool about letting us have free range and just improv. It's kind of hard to keep up with some of these guys. They're just so quick and witty, but I try and keep up."

What was it like being the girl around all these guys?

Amanda Crew: "It was… I definitely had to switch my mindset and become a guy for three months. I mean, I was pretty much the only girl for three months. My boy side came out. I'd pick out the hot girls for them and make jokes about boobs and balls. My mom was disturbed about my mouth when I came home and the things that were coming out of it. She's like, 'Who are you?' 'I'm your son, Amanda Crew.'"

Nice. You should have come up with a guy name though.

Amanda Crew: "Amandon. Amandon Crew."

Writer John Morris and Writer/Director Sean Anders

So how tough was it to adapt the book?

Sean Anders: "I don't know, not that tough. We really liked the premise as a jumping off point. We had a really good time. We banged out the first draft pretty quickly. We just had so much fun writing, it just kind of kept going."

Was the appeal of it that it was a teen romantic comedy or that it was a roadtrip?

John Morris: "I think that it was a roadtrip because we had like a list of things we wanted to do. Like a buddy comedy and a roadtrip comedy and so this just kind of fit into something we wanted to take a stab out so we did."

I always wonder with writer/directors, how much do you let your actors change the words?

John Morris: "As much as they want."

Sean Anders: "We're pretty liberal about that. We feel like that funny is funny wherever you get it. We don't care if one of the actors comes up with a great line or a camera assistant comes up with a great line."

John Morris: "It's great. At the end of the movie it says 'Written by' – it's still our names."

Sean Anders: "We get to take credit for all that."

Do you have any weird roadtrip memories of your own?

Sean Anders: "I have a similar… I did once drive perilously for sex."

John Morris: "I rode a bike once perilously for sex."

Sean Anders: "I drove through a snowstorm thinking… When I was about 17 I drove through a snowstorm when all the roads were closed thinking it was going to be my first time, and as it turned out she dumped me so."

Oh, that's sad!

John Morris: "So take that movie premiere!"
