Selma Blair ('Liz')
You are so gorgeous. How much fun is it to get back into this character?
Selma Blair: "So much fun and so much fun to be with these people. I mean, the character is a really straightforward, great character. I loved being on the set every day with these people. I really love these people. We love Guillermo. We all are so thrilled to be a part of his storytelling. I mean, what a blessing. We're the luckiest people."
He's so imaginative. How tough is it to connect with his vision?
Selma Blair: "He creates the vision. I mean, it's not even much of a greenscreen. The Golden Army itself was a greenscreen and that was difficult for me because I'm the only one with a face so you can tell when I'm not seeing it. Everyone else is covered. You know, he creates these monsters. I mean, there's been nothing like that since Star Wars' cantina scene. You know, really someone's imagination giving the fans a whole world that's completely there."
I've never read a [Hellboy] comic book before and I love this character. What do you think it is about this guy that gets people worked up?
Selma Blair: "He's funny. You know, Hellboy, I think Hellboy's sexy and he seems like a real guy. I mean, you forget. He's the love of my life you know, Liz's and I'm a real girl. Liz is a real human being that happens to burst into flames, but she falls in love with this demon man who just seems like a regular, real sexy blue collar guy. I don't know. He just has a great sense of humor. He gets the job done."
Jeffrey Tambor ('Tom Manning')
Tell me about returning to the world of Hellboy.
Jeffrey Tambor: "It's like we never went away. You know, it's like that phone call you have where you go, 'Oh ' You haven't seen somebody for five years and you pick it up. That's how it was. We did our first Hellboy in Prague and then we did six months in Budapest. [Noticing Doug Jones is kissing the hand of a journalist who's interviewing him] You know, Doug is just trying to have his way with every single person. What is Doug been eating do you think? Every time I'm next to him he's kissing somebody and he's complimenting them on their ensemble. I think he's just trying to get laid. You were celibate in Budapest."
Doug Jones: "I was what?"
Jeffrey Tambor: "Celibate."
Doug Jones: "I know. I heard you."
So it is just like a family.
Jeffrey Tambor: "I love Doug. Doug is great. Doug had a call at 12:15am every day. I got rolling in around 7:30 so he was great. But, it's Guillermo del Toro. That's all you have to know. And Ron Perlman. Let's not forget about Ron Perlman who does a great job. I think an Academy Award job."
Really?
Jeffrey Tambor: "Really, I do. Oh absolutely. You know he'll never get it because they don't get that. We don't get that. I'm in the Academy. It's just hard to vote on."
You guys don't even get comedies, seriously. How many comedies have won for Best Picture?
Jeffrey Tambor: "That's always been that way. Well, Billy Wilder won a bunch."
Look how far back you have to go.
Jeffrey Tambor: "I know. You're right. It's always looked at as a lesser thing."
And it's as difficult if not more so.
Jeffrey Tambor: "Yeah."
Arrested Development movie that could be up for it.
Jeffrey Tambor: "Yeah, I think so. I think we're going to do it."
I loved that series. I was so bummed when it went off the air.
Jeffrey Tambor: "It had to go off the air. Yeah, it did. But look, things will work out. I have no idea why. It was very popular."
The best writing ever. It was so smart.
Jeffrey Tambor: "Yeah, very smart."
Maybe it was too smart for TV. Maybe it needs to be a movie.
Jeffrey Tambor: "I don't know. I have no idea. If I knew that Somebody wrote a book many years ago about this whole thing and every chapter went, 'Nobody knows anything.' We don't know."
Hellboy 3 though?
Jeffrey Tambor: "I'm there. I'm actually already in costume underneath this."
