Seann William Scott - 'Wheeler' in Role Models
Tell me about working with Paul Rudd because your styles of comedy are so different.
Seann William Scott: "Yeah, we have a different approach to it but at the end of the day, I think we're both willing to do whatever it takes to try and make somebody laugh. But it was fun. I think the guy's incredibly intelligent and a really nice guy. I loved it. I hope the movie does well just so we can work together again."
And working with David Wain, he's got such a good sense of humor. What's he like on the set as a director?
Seann William Scott: "David Wain – he's got a very specific but different approach. But it was fun because he just let us try anything out and he made it comfortable to take a risk. If you made a mistake, you didn't feel bad about it."
How do you know when you're pushing it too far? It's an R-rated comedy but…
Seann William Scott: "You're asking me that? I'll go as far as you ask me to. Clearly. I've made a career by going as far as possible."
Did you actually have to get into that [Minotaur] costume in this thing?
Seann William Scott: "Yeah, and now I'm thinking it wouldn't even have mattered. I could have had some guy go in there and…you know? Yeah, I shouldn't have though. It was hard work. Sometimes I felt like I was putting too much out there because I'm a Method actor. And I feel like I have to be in the character. I'm just kidding. I don't know what I'm doing. I have no idea what I'm doing."
How freeing is it to do an R-rated comedy?
Seann William Scott: "I prefer to do R-rated comedies. I don't really watch that many PG-13 comedies. I don't think they're that funny. I mean, there can be good ones but when it comes to this kind of genre where it's like kind of raunchy… You can't do a raunchy, crazy, Judd Apatow-type comedy without it being rated R. It's more fun because you don't feel restricted at all. As long as you're not being lazy with the dialogue and just throwing in swear words all the time, I prefer it – for sure."
And I hear this has heart to it. It's not just comedy.
Seann William Scott: "No, it's true. The director did a great job. David Wain did a fantastic job, and the writers. I think those are the kind of movies that I respond to when it comes to R-rated comedies. Kind of like American Pie in a way where I think if it was just crude, gross-out humor, I don't think the movie would have done as well. Or we wouldn't have done like 50 American Pie movies. I'm signed up for 100,000 American Pie movies by the way. Yeah."
And Role Models 2, 3, 4, and5?
Seann William Scott: "Exactly. I just whore out for all of these movies. But I think those are the movies that seem to be effective. And this movie definitely has a lot of heart. But at its core, it's just really funny."
Bobb'e J Thompson - ('Ronnie') in Role Models
What was it like working with Seann William Scott?
Bobb'e J Thompson: "Working with Seann William Scott was just so fun. It was just a blessing. Same with Paul Rudd and Chris [Mintz-Plasse]. It was just crazy."
Seann William Scott: "Say I'm the best actor ever."
Bobb'e J Thompson: "I don't know about all that, Seann. No, Seann is the best actor I've actor I've ever worked with. Seann is the best comedian I've ever worked with. Seann is the nicest person I've ever worked with. Seann is the only person that's bought me shoes. Seann is the only person who's given me money."
Seann William Scott: "Two pairs."
Bobb'e J Thompson: "Two pairs – the only person that's ever done for me. And for that, I love him."
Seann William Scott: "It's all true. Keep going."
Bobb'e J Thompson: "And for that I love him. I will always love him. I know that if I ever need anything, I can call Seann William Scott."
Seann William Scott: "Thank you. Thank you so much. Thanks for coming."
