Ryan Kwanten – Breakthrough Award Winner and Star of True BloodCongratulations on the award. Last season on True Blood you stole the show.
Ryan Kwanten: "I don't know about that."
Jason all of sudden became this major character that he wasn't in the books. How tough was it to deliver those lines which were ridiculous with such conviction?
Ryan Kwanten: "Well there's a certain naiveté that I can hide behind because Jason is so unbelievably innocent. So if I just hide behind that, I feel like the conviction will follow."
And is it good to be the guy who gets to save the day?
Ryan Kwanten: "What guy doesn't want to be that? Rhetorical question there, for sure. No, it's terrible. I can't stand it."
There's so much of a change in the character from Season 1 to Season 2. Did you anticipate that change coming?
Ryan Kwanten: "I didn't anticipate the change, but I know that I'm leaving myself in the capable hands of Alan Ball and his expert team of writers. And just even the amazing arc they gave me in the first season, to then have that sort of two-fold in the second season was exquisite. And I know they've done the same thing again in the third season. So, they're twisting and turning, it's such a malleable series, and they do the same thing with the actors, too. We never know what's going to come."
And it's such a large cast and they've added a lot more new characters this year. Is that tough for you guys to get your time in?
Ryan Kwanten: "Oh no, I never worry about that. No, I just keep doing the work and keep putting the hours in. What goes around, comes around."
And you have a new love interest this season, right?
Ryan Kwanten: "I do. Well, Jason does."
What was it like working with your new love interest?
Ryan Kwanten: "She's great. She plays a redneck but she's actually a ridiculously intelligent young lady, so it's nice that she adds that weight to a character that could be a caricature."
Sam [Trammell] keeps telling me that the third season is going to blow the other two seasons away. Is it so much better than the first two seasons?
Ryan Kwanten: "I don't know about better. It's certainly different. I'm not one to judge and it hasn't even come out yet so I can only speak in terms of the table reads and what I've done, because I very rarely see anyone else's work until when everyone else sees it. So it's hard for me to kind of judge. It's really hard for me to be subjective about it too, to say, 'This is great and that's better.'"
Are you looking forward to season four already?
Ryan Kwanten: "Sure. Yeah. If ever I was going to be stuck on a series, I'm glad it's this one."
