Ryan Kwanten - Voice of 'Kludd' in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
Tell us about playing Kludd. Tell us about this owl.Ryan Kwanten: "Kludd is sort of misunderstood, misguided, and he sort of suffers from the elderly brother syndrome. His younger brother's sort of stolen most of the natural talent and he sort of feels the need to set an example. And it's not necessarily the best example because when he's confronted with an evil force, he doesn't have the strength or the willpower or the inclination to turn his back on it."
Did you study owls? Did you do anything to get into this?
Ryan Kwanten: "Yeah, I studied bits and pieces, but I'm also a big brother so that was my... I had, you know, a couple of decades of study right there."
Was it easy to find the voice or did you just use your natural voice?
Ryan Kwanten: "It's an Australian accent for once, for me, but there's still sort of more of a boyish quality to him at the beginning and then more of a sort of an evil quality - I don't want to give too much away - at the end. Hopefully, I don't have... I'm somewhere in the middle, I think."
Working with Zack Snyder, what was that like?
Ryan Kwanten: "He's great. He's sort of conducive to creative talent. He gives all of his, not just his heads of department but also the actors, tremendous amount of legroom and freedom to do what we want. It's great."
If you could sum up this movie for audiences, what is it? Why should people go see it?
Ryan Kwanten: "I think there's a famous quote that sort of says are you willing to die having left undone the things you could have changed today, and I think this is sort of one of those stories. Without getting too deep, it sort of makes you think, 'Well, are you living the life you really want to life?'"
What's your favorite weekend getaway?
Ryan Kwanten: "It's very, very simple. It's usually just like good friends on a beach, costs nothing. Good company, good scenery - easily pleased."
