Rutina Wesley – 'Tara' in True Blood
They have done everything they possibly can to this poor girl. What can they do to her next?
Rutina Wesley: "Anything but kill me. Please don't kill me. Yeah, I mean, I don't know. She's just been going through an incredible human experience right now. A lot of ups and downs, but I've known some people who've had a road like Tara's had so it's not unusual."
So next season she's going to be mourning the loss of her great love, right?
Rutina Wesley: "I think so. I think so. I mean I hope that Sookie will be there to pick her up a bit. And maybe there will be something with Sam. I don't know."
Would you like to see that storyline happen?
Rutina Wesley: "I mean maybe, because I think Tara was really sort of like falling in love with him, she just wasn't ready for it yet, you know? She didn't really know what she wanted to do. It's going to be interesting to see if that happens."
I miss the Tara from the first season that snappy and in your face and had an opinion about everything. Are we going to see that in the third season?
Rutina Wesley: "Well, that's still there but that's not really who she is. That's her defense. I think she's more of a vulnerable flower. That's more of the essence of Tara. You know what I mean?"
You really got into this.
Rutina Wesley: "Yeah. I love playing her."
Is she a character that you can really dig into?
Rutina Wesley: "Yes. She's like someone who I really deeply understand her heart and where she comes from. I mean, being raised like that I consider her to be a wounded animal. Hopefully we will see her and her mother's relationship start to develop a little bit more. Because I think if you see Tara's mother sober, you might get a clue in to how Tara is and why she is the way that she is."
Is it surreal to be on a show with vampires and shapeshifters? Do you ever get used to that?
Rutina Wesley: "I never get used to it. I mean, when the fangs are in it's like, 'Don't come near me.' Oh my gosh, it's like, 'Please!'"
They freak you out?
Rutina Wesley: "Yeah, they look real."
When you signed on to it, did you have any clue that it was going to be what it is?
Rutina Wesley: "I had no clue. I mean this has gotten such great reviews. Fans are loving it. And it being my first show, I'm still overwhelmed. Every day I'm like crying a little bit."
They're not just loving it, they're obsessed by it. [Truth told, I'm one of the obsessed.]
Rutina Wesley: "I know. People have True Blood parties. They're drinking their True Blood drinks. It's crazy."
Do you ever go on the internet and look at what they're saying?
Rutina Wesley: "I used to do that and then I had to stop."
That's sad. Maybe next season it'll be back to being really good stuff.
Rutina Wesley: "Yeah, maybe. We'll see."
