Rooney Mara and Kyle Gallner - A Nightmare on Elm Street

Why do you think we're still so fascinated with the story of Freddy Krueger?

Rooney Mara: "I don't know. It's so weird."

Are you fascinated?

Rooney Mara: "I mean, listen, I think it's fascinating because it's such a scary notion that you're so vulnerable while you're sleeping. It's a horrifying thought because you have no control over it."

Kyle Gallner: "You can't escape. I mean, you eventually have to sleep and when you have no control over what's going on and you don't know how to stop this, and you're trying to stay up as long as you can but you know at some point you're going to have to sleep, it's a lose/lose situation essentially. Yeah, and I think he's just been so popular because the movies have gone on for a really long time. He's been so iconic. It's really kind of become a franchise that's more for the fans, you know? I think it's been handed down from like parents will tell their kids to check it out. Like, 'This was amazing when I was a kid.' I think it's kind of a timeless kind of movie."

When you get a script for something like this where it's part of a franchise that people love so much, do you feel a little extra weight knowing you're part of this kind of thing?

Rooney Mara: "Yes."

How do you handle that?

Rooney Mara: "I just try and ignore it. You have to just take everything with a grain of salt. You have to understand that no matter what, people are going to be unhappy – some people are going to be happy. It is what it is."

Kyle Gallner: "And horror movies are tough, especially when you're rebooting a franchise like this. Horror fans are probably the most brutal critics out there. But people will see it. Everyone who wants to see it, will see it. Everyone who wants to talk smack on it will."

Were you guys fans of the franchise before you signed on?

Rooney Mara: "I saw the original, the first one, when I was really young. It horrified me. It literally ruined my sleep as a child. But that was the only one I saw. But I was a big fan of the original. Yes, I was."

Kyle Gallner: "I actually had only seen bits and pieces when I was younger, and then this came along and I'd never seen it beginning to end and I chose not to watch it. We watched it towards the end when everything was figured out, and I figured out my character. So then we popped it in and we watched it. It was my first time was on the set, actually."

Was it creepy on the set?

Rooney Mara: "Yeah, it is. It's smoky. We had really, really good sets."

Kyle Gallner: "And we filmed at a lot of crazy locations, like…"

Rooney Mara: "A lot of stuff was on location, actually."

Kyle Gallner: "Like dynamited out old steel factories and like old abandoned factories."

Rooney Mara: "Not very safe."
