Ron Perlman ('Hellboy')
So how much fun is it to get back into him again?
Ron Perlman: "So much fun. So much fun, it's not even putting into wordable if that's a sentence."
Whoa, that's a lot of fun.
Ron Perlman: "That's a lot of fun. I wish everybody, especially the real dudes, could get to play Hellboy like at least for a day. It's so much fun."
Is it easier this time because you don't have to go back and tell the origin story so you just get to get right into it? Is that more freeing for you?
Ron Perlman: "It's a very complex scenario this time around. I mean, the groundwork has been laid. The world has been set. The table has been set, but the ante has been raised significantly in the second film. The action is bigger. The stakes are higher, and the relationship between our two lovebirds Hellboy and Liz is on the rocks."
Is it nice to actually have more of the relationship story and get into that a little deeper?
Ron Perlman: "It's nice to see a guy who's been charged with saving humanity having to do it in a completely compromised and drunken state."
That's always fun.
Ron Perlman: "Because he's being screwed around by this chick in a big way."
The fans loved the first film so you guys set the bar so high. How tough was it when you're reading that script to go, "Yeah, it is going to top it. We are going to satisfy everybody out there?
Ron Perlman: "You put your faith in Guillermo del Toro and you can't buy a better stock in the world. I mean, you know, there's Google and then there's Guillermo del Toro. You want to invest in this guy, and you want to just completely try to get on his team and take the greatest ride of your life. You're always in good hands and you never have to worry about will it be good or bad. You know it's going to be at least interesting and imminently watchable. We just bask in his glow."
You've worked with him so many times now. How have you seen him evolve over the years as a filmmaker?
Ron Perlman: "He's basically the exact same guy I met back in 1990. The exact same guy. The only thing that changes is the canvass that he chooses to paint on. He keeps going back and doing smaller works like Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth. And then every once in a while he stretches out and does a big old studio comic book movie. The circumstances change, Guillermo remains true to his original aesthetic and intellect and passion."
And Hellboy 3? You're ready for that one?
Ron Perlman: "Fingers crossed."
But you're ready, right? You'll be back for it?
Ron Perlman: "Well, you know, if I'm not in a walker by then."
Maybe it'll be less than four years until we get to the next one.
Ron Perlman: "This is my daughter, Blake."
You're gorgeous by the way.
Ron Perlman: "She's making her film debut here in Hellboy 2."
Are you really? Who are you playing?
Blake Perlman: "I have a little role as the reporter. There's a big action sequence where Hellboy gives himself away and that's me. You'll see me in there, speckled."
Have you always wanted to be an actress?
Blake Perlman: "Always, all my life. I'm a singer and a songwriter so I just finished an album, actually, now so that's my focus. But I love to act and I love to kind of learn from the best."
Exactly. So more collaboration between the two of you in another project that's not a Hellboy?
Ron Perlman: "Right now we're going to collaborate on a bag of popcorn."
