Ron Howard – The Director of Frost/Nixon
Ron Howard: "It's ludicrous that the Hollywood Film Festival was kind of a non-event for so many years. And in the last four or five years, it's gained in stature. I think the community has kind of awakened to the fact that we should have a festival that means something. And it's sort of the first party of the year, so it's fun."
How easy or difficult was it bringing a movie to the screen that had already been a successful play with these guys?
Ron Howard: "One of the reasons that I'm thrilled that they acknowledged Dan and Mike and their editing in Frost/Nixon is that it was a real cinematic challenge to bring the play to the screen, and yet audiences are responding to it and telling us that we did a very good job. It's fun. It's dramatic. It's suspenseful, and certainly the work that Dan and Mike did as editors lent a lot to that."
Who are you a fan of?
Ron Howard: "Well, there's Ben Stiller. I'd sure like to work with him sometime. He's right over next to me. It's always fun because I don't live in LA anymore, so in fact coming to something like the Hollywood Film Festival is a little bit of a reunion for me."
Your Funny or Die video is hilarious.
Ron Howard: "You know, I woke up with the idea and I went to the Funny or Die guys and they said, 'This would be great. We'd love to support you in doing this.' And then I went to Henry Winkler. He was very excited about it and very supportive of Barack Obama. And I called up Andy [Griffith] in North Carolina and I didn't even get to finish my sentence. He says, 'I want Barack Obama to be the next President. I'm in.' It was something really new for me because I've never publically endorsed a candidate before. But I, along with Henry and Andy, so believe in the future that Barack Obama offers this country that I felt compelled to exercise my rights in a democracy and go ahead and put my opinion out there, along with Henry's and Andy's. "
