George Lopez - 'Rafael' in Rio
This is a musically focused filmed. Is your daughter getting you into any new music these days?
George Lopez: "Well, you know I've gone the transition from High School Musical to the Twilight soundtracks, and now to Justin Bieber and Never Say Never, and I'm waiting for the next thing. I think there's a kid in Australia, Cody Simpson, maybe he's the next kid to pop up. So I see the posters change as the leaves would fall off the trees. It's an exciting time because the longer I can keep her into Bieber it'll keep the other dudes at school away. They might have the same hair, but they don't have the swagger."
So talk about working with Carlos Saldanha in this because I understand he does all the characters.
George Lopez: "Carlos gets really into your personal space because he'll, almost like a bird, fly around you. He's so meticulous about what he wanted. I don't think I've meet a director that just made everything stop to get things right. He put all of these voices together and would take will.i.am and show will.i.am as a bird what will's singing. Me, with my standup, and then me as the bird. Nobody's done that, like say, 'This is the reason I picked you,' and then match the perfect voice to the character. Nobody's here by accident; they were all chosen. It was really nice."
Did you do a lot of improv'ing?
George Lopez: "You know, there was some stuff but not a lot. I would just say in terms of like two words together. But jokes, he had. The writers had done a great job with it. I'm excited because it really is a very colorful movie, and it is a 3D that is technologically the cutting edge of 3D. Hey, we're all going to be in 3D at some point. We're all going to own 3D glasses."
Are we going to have a spin-off with your character?
George Lopez: "I hope so, yes."
Rodrigo Santoro - 'Tulio' in Rio
Rodrigo Santoro: "My character is a very passionate ornithologist - bird doctor. He's sweet and a little bit of a nerdy kind of guy. But, a lot of fun."
Did you get a chance to meet Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg and the rest of the cast?
Rodrigo Santoro: "I actually met them at the premiere in Brazil. We just had a premiere in Rio two weeks ago, and that's when I met them. Because, you know, when you do voice, you work by yourself. We were never together working."
Your character does a lot of bizarre movements. What are you doing behind the scenes when that's going on?
Rodrigo Santoro: "I did all that. They record you. The process is like they record you, you have a couple of lines, you improvise, and then you start to just move your body like you're acting and then the animator works on the top of it. That's why you see the guy, he truly believes he's communicating with the bird so he talks 'bird'."
So are we going to see that on the DVD, this flapping around?
Rodrigo Santoro: "Hopefully not, but if it is there - what am I going to do?"
And you're working on the Hemingway movie too?
Rodrigo Santoro: "Yeah."
How's that going?
Rodrigo Santoro: "I just wrapped before yesterday."
And, how did it go?
Rodrigo Santoro: "Awesome. Amazing. One of the best experiences I've ever had."
Really?
Rodrigo Santoro: "Great cast, director beyond...like really, really artistic, real into actors - Phil Kaufman. I mean, great."
Are most of your scenes with Clive Owen?
Rodrigo Santoro: "No. Most of my scenes are with Clive, Nicole [Kidman], but most with David Strathairn."
