Ray Stevenson – ' Volstagg' in Thor
What's happening with Thor?Ray Stevenson: "It's the first day of filming today!"
Did you film?
Ray Stevenson: "Oh my god, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we're all up there. It's very, very exciting. In fact I didn't think I was going to make it. They made special dispensation and got me out of jail. But I had full regalia on today."
How do you play someone who's that big?
Ray Stevenson: "I've got a huge fat suit and all this stuff. I'm going to be shedding a lot of pounds in that thing. But no, just great fun. And Kenneth Branagh's fantastic."
You worked with him before as an actor.
Ray Stevenson: "Yeah, Theory of Flight I think it was, a long, long time ago. I loved him then, and then I got the call out of the blue for this and was completely blown away by it and jumped at the chance to work with him again. And I'm so pleased I did – and here we are."
You don't have to know the Thor mythology to understand the film, do you?
Ray Stevenson: "It's based on the Thor comic book. It's definitely the Marvel comic book and the origins of the Norse legends. What is actually behind the Norse legends is what's explored through the Marvel comic book. You know, the existence of Asgard and the nine realms. And it's more sort of in the high realms of intergalactic space and planets, and then… It's very exciting."
What's the tone Kenneth Branagh's going for?
Ray Stevenson: "Epic. There's visits to Earth as well. There's the wonderful Stellan Skarsgard, Natalie Portman, and all, but the presence of gods or the previous presence of gods, but it's a great, great… It's the sort of film you just want to see as a kid. You come out, 'Oh my god, flight of fantasy here we go!' It's that escapism again, and Marvel and Disney are putting their weight behind it, putting a lot of money behind it. It's the first day of filming. It couldn't be more exciting."
Can you describe what you did? Are you allowed to talk about it?
Ray Stevenson: "I couldn't because it's not the start of the movie. It's a bit later on, so it's just, 'And then this and then this…'"
And a Rome movie – is there going to be one?
Ray Stevenson: "I don't know. I've read a script. I believe there's a script I've read a version of. Who knows? There's the right people who have the right motivation to try and make it happen, it would be wonderful if Pullo got to ride again. It wouldn't be very tidy. It might be a bit bloody. If Pullo gets to ride again, it would be great."
