Nicholas Braun - 'Lloyd' in Prom
How much fun is to be back together with these guys?
Nicholas Braun: "The cast of this movie is a really special one. Most of them haven't done much before in their careers, and then seeing their work is hugely impressive. They're so good. They're naturals, and I'm like the proud father. Not to say that I've done a ton of things, but I know how hard it is to come onto a big movie set and perform. They all did it in spades."
I hear you guys really bonded too, like a family.
Nicholas Braun: "Yeah. I relate it to a summer camp. It was like a day camp you'd go off to, you'd get dropped off in the morning...some of them did get dropped off by their parents. You know what I mean? It's great. Then you spend the whole day and you're doing what you love to do, which is this film, and then at the end of the day it's like, 'Okay, good day. See you tomorrow.'"
So then you go from something like this to an environment like a Kevin Smith film?
Nicholas Braun: "Yeah. Very different. I did, actually, like 6 days after we shot Prom I was working with Kevin doing this very dark tale. I liked it. I like doing that. I like being able to go from clean, nice, cotton candy, lovely story into this gritty thing where I'm hick and getting lured in by Melissa Leo. We're going to get captured and drugged. We're going to get killed and it was a wild turn."
Nicholas Braun: "It is crazy."
I haven't seen it yet.
Nicholas Braun: "You've got to see it. It's such a good movie. I love the movie. Every time I see it, I see more of what Kevin's nuanced into it. It's a brilliant script, brilliant story. He cast it perfectly. It was a really fun one."
It's such a change of genre for him. It's not what you'd expect. Is it more horror than anything else? What is it?
Nicholas Braun: "It's tough to say what Red State is. It's a lot of different movies. It starts off like a typical Kevin Smith movie. It turns into a Coen Brothers movie, and then a Tarantino gory sort of situation. And then it turns into like a little psychological...and then there's a big twist at the end that I won't tell you about. But it's just a hell of a script, a hybrid of a lot of cool things."
Did he stick to it when you were shooting?
Nicholas Braun: "Yeah. He stuck to the story but he let us drift. The first day on set he said, 'Hey, guys, listen. I think you're all great and I've come to a point in my career where the words...I'm not a stickler anymore, so just go off page and screw it. Do your thing,' which is like an amazing thing for Kevin to say knowing how he values his own words. It was a great, great movie. We get to do another one together, Kevin and I. We're going to do Hit Somebody. We're going to shoot that at the end of this year, I think. That's a hell of a script as well."
It's not a comedy?
Nicholas Braun: "It's a lot. It's more of a Forrest Gump-ian sort of thing."
