Peter Sarsgaard - 'John' in Orphan

It's really not just an evil child movie, right?

Peter Sarsgaard: "No."

How would you describe it?

Peter Sarsgaard: "It's a movie with an evil child in it."

But there's more to it than that.

Peter Sarsgaard: "No, it's a movie about this family that's having problems that sort of invites trouble in because they do the kind of inappropriate thing of adopting a child to kind of make themselves feel better. And they cause their own destruction in that way."

Is it a difficult film to talk about because there is such a twist at the end?

Peter Sarsgaard: "Just don't talk about it. I guess it makes the film seem either a lot more interesting or a lot more ordinary that I'm unable to discuss parts of it. It's either intriguing or, 'Wow, that doesn't sound that interesting.'"

And you've been friends with Vera Farmiga for a long time. Is that why you signed on, is that part of the appeal of a project like this?

Peter Sarsgaard: "Absolutely. That was like one of the first things, I got a script that had her name on it as someone who was circling the other part. I read it. So then you read it with a good actor playing that part, and then all the parts that aren't playing well you think, 'Well, they're going to make that great.' It's a great way to get actors to work together."

How tough is the atmosphere on the set when you're doing something this dark?

Peter Sarsgaard: "Not at all. I mean you don't need to rock in the corner and suck your thumb in order to play a scene in this movie."

You don't? So we never saw you do that - it won't be in the outtakes or deleted scenes?

Peter Sarsgaard: "There was no sucking of the thumb or anything like that."

Jimmy Bennett - 'Daniel'

You've done horror movies before, so what sets this one apart?

Jimmy Bennett: "It's different from most scary movies. This one kind of makes you think more. Normally scary movies are just like killing, thrasher movies. This one is just kind of like scarier when you process it through your mind what's actually going on."

Is that what scares you? Do you like the more psychological thrillers?

Jimmy Bennett: "I like psychological thrillers, yeah. Those scare me a lot worse than these movies that jump out at you. I kind of already see it coming. 'Oh, he's behind the door.'"

This one has a twist that you can't talk about. How tough is it not to talk about the twist? Don't you want to tell people?

Jimmy Bennett: "I've actually had to catch myself a couple of times down the line. I'm like, 'Ahhh!' Some of my favorite scenes that I had to work on had to do with that."

What was the mood like on the set?

Jimmy Bennett: "It was actually really relaxed. Me and Jaume [Collet-Serra[ and everyone were always cracking jokes. Me and Isabelle [Fuhrman] were hanging out all the time after set. It was really fun."

And you've got Shorts next?

Jimmy Bennett: "Shorts is next. That should be a lot of fun."

A totally different type of movie, one for the family.

Jimmy Bennett: "That one was really fun to work on, too. Robert Rodriguez, he was really cool. He's like a big kid."
