Adhir Kalyan - 'Pahud' in Paul Blart: Mall Cop
You were in one of my favorite TV shows that got cancelled, and I'm really upset that it got cancelled.Adhir Kalyan: "Thank you very much. Yes, Aliens in America marked really the beginning of my journey here in America. It's a show that completely changed my life. Even though we were all disappointed when it came to pass, I felt incredibly privileged to be a part of such a piece and very happy that it's opened so many doors for me."
Like Mall Cop.
Adhir Kalyan: "Absolutely, yes."
What do you do in Mall Cop?
Adhir Kalyan: "I play the role of Pahud. He is an angry, obsessive though technologically gifted ex-boyfriend who tracks his ex-girlfriend's every move via her phone using GPS."
So is this you in real life?
Adhir Kalyan: "No, no. As an actor I try and immerse myself in characters who are very far removed from me. The only similarity that I do share with Pahud is that he enjoys being in a semi or completely nude state in his apartment, and that's the way I choose to spend my time in privacy as well."
But not out on the red carpet.
Adhir Kalyan: "No. I mean, and that is not because I feel a need to put on clothing onto my body, it's just that I know that other people aren't quite as comfortable with my nudity as I am."
That makes total sense. Now did you get to ride one of these Segways, because I saw you standing on one and I'm not sure riding it would be safe for you?
Adhir Kalyan: "No. If you saw me standing next to it, you probably also saw me attempt to mount the personal transporter and fall off. Just for the record, I do have great hand-eye coordination. However, it took me a little by surprise. I didn't realize it was going to move. I didn't realize that somebody forgot to switch it off!"
And that was not your fault and you didn't know about it.
Adhir Kalyan: "No, didn't know about it."
You've got a bunch of movies coming up too.
Adhir Kalyan: "Yes, I'm very excited. It's a very special day for me because this film marks my American feature film debut, but it's the first of four pictures I have coming out this year. And the next film is called Fired Up for Sony Screen Gems in which I play a flamboyant gay male cheerleader named Brewster."
Also not close to who you really are.
Adhir Kalyan: "No, no. And then I follow that up with a picture directed by Miguel Arteta starring Michael Cera as the lead called Youth in Revolt. And in that my character gets to lose his virginity on screen and speak a little French. And then I just completed a picture in November and December of last year called High School, which involves 'high' having a double entendre, also referring to the entire school getting high on marijuana brownies, with Adrien Brody, Michael Chiklis, and Colin Hanks. So I'm very excited about the year ahead and with Nip/Tuck having just aired this Tuesday on FX, I couldn't have really asked for a better start to 2009."
Could you have a better 2009? Seriously?
Adhir Kalyan: "Well, I mean thus far it's been good. I think the only problem might start is if all of these pictures air and then I'm unemployed for the rest of my career. "
That'd be okay because at least you've got it in the bank.
Adhir Kalyan: "Indeed. No, it's been a lovely time in my life and I feel very grateful to be here on this day."
