Interview with the Stars of Pathology: Milo Ventimiglia, Lauren Lee Smith, and Michael Weston

How much did you study with real pathologists?

Milo Ventimiglia: "We spent a lot of time with the LA County Coroner's office. I mean, I saw about 17, 18 real autopsies and saw a couple hundred dead bodies. We spent a lot of time there. We strived to show the reality of what this world is, of what an autopsy is, of what a pathologist's job is. Of what an autopsy room – how it looks, how it feels, how it smells."

Describe the smell.

Milo Ventimiglia: "One of the worst things you're ever going to smell."

Lauren Lee Smith: "It's like you can't, really. There's no way to describe it."

Michael Weston: "It's like doody."

Lauren Lee Smith: "It's worse. It's worse than that."

Michael Weston: "It's like distant old doody."

Lauren Lee Smith: "The smell of death, basically."

Milo Ventimiglia: "You never forget it either. Like I was walking around somewhere and I smelled it after I'd been in the coroner's office. Like, 'Oh my god, there's something dead nearby.'"

Lauren Lee Smith: "Actually, that was the one thing out of spending all the time watching the autopsies and being in there. You sort of get used to it in a way, after about 15 minutes. But to me out of everything it was the smell that I found the most disturbing."

Michael Weston: "That lingered."

How surreal was it just to be around dead bodies?

Milo Ventimiglia: "It's not an everyday thing for people."

Michael Weston: "I found it sort of weirdly liberating. Maybe that's just my character talking… You find that you go down into this sort of weird dungeon-like place. You sit down there and you walk through these coolers full of dead bodies, and you see all these brains being taken out. You see crazy stuff and then you walk back out into your normal life where people are alive and walking around. And it gives you a sort of weird feeling, like, 'Whoa, here I am. I'm living. I'm working.' This stuff works because when a bodies lying there right in front of you, it's really cold and pragmatic. It's like, 'That is dead.' It could be a chair or a table, it's so lifeless you know? That's what I thought as I walked out."

Milo Ventimiglia: "It gives you a better appreciation for life and how you live it."

And the special effects on the set?

Milo Ventimiglia: "The makeup, the effects, we had real people with appliances I'll call it, on them to where it looked like the woman's skull – the skin was retracted and the skull was taken off and there's an actual brain inside."

Michael Weston: "Everything was so real. And you get fitted for these…I think Alyssa Milano had like a full body cast like reproduction of her body done. There were like a lot of prosthetics that were done. They give you this full body cast and then they make it out of gelatin. It's so lifelike in the kind of work they do on it is amazing."

Talk about the story just a little bit. What happens and what can we expect from the movie?

Milo Ventimiglia: "A group of forensic pathologists who get a bit of a God complex and start killing. You figure you're so learned in your field, you know everything about it, you also know how to take life away without it being detected. It's kind of that seduction, that enticement to go into that darker side of being able to get away with it."

And who do you play?

Milo Ventimiglia: "I play Dr Ted Grey. He's a guy who's kind of like on the straight and narrow. He has a great life ahead of him and he falls victim to like the seduces… Seduces?"

Lauren Lee Smith: "Seduction."

Milo Ventimiglia: "Seduction, thank you, of the characters Michael and Lauren play."

And who do you guys play?

Michael Weston: "The 'seduces'. I play Jake. We're these very high octane students at this place and I play the sort of leader of this group that corral people into this game. And Lauren and I have our relationship together and when Ted shows up he's like a really worthy opponent, and the most that's ever come along. We immediately realize that each other are the other's nemesis and we welcome each other into each other's lives."

Milo Ventimiglia: "It's a challenge but it's also going to be a lot of fun. You've finally got some kids to play with that are really going to push you."
