Odette Yustman - The Unborn
Your second role as being the girl in peril - why are they turning to you for that character?
Odette Yustman: "I mean, what's going on here? I'm a nice girl. Why are they doing that to me?"
Meagan [Good] was saying that you had an interesting experience filming in the insane asylum. Things were a little bit spooky there.
Odette Yustman: "Things were really spooky. You know, I never really believed in the supernatural until now. We were shooting and in the middle of one of the scenes all the lights just went out. That's terrifying. We were in an insane asylum and all of the lights went out. I mean, really? Come on guys! Stop it."
You're being punked.
Odette Yustman: "Exactly, so we thought… And then somebody took a picture in the dark going down a flight of stairs and you can clearly see in the picture, hands gripping on to a…it's just terrifying."
Had you ever experienced anything weird before?
Odette Yustman: "Never, never."
So it was just this movie that did this to you?
Odette Yustman: "Just this movie."
And you're a believer now?
Odette Yustman: "I am a believer. I mean, I saw it."
What do you think the hands were?
Odette Yustman: "I have no clue. Maybe spirits that are left behind in the asylum – angry spirits."
Can you quickly say what your character does in this?
Odette Yustman: "My character is Casey Beldon. She's this girl who thinks that she's an only child her whole life. She finds out that she's a twin, not before having these recurring dreams and hallucinations. And she's trying to figure out what's going on. There's this young boy that's haunting her. And so it's the story of her basically trying to get rid of this spirit that's trying to possess her body."
That sounds really spooky. And what's it like working with David Goyer?
Odette Yustman: "Amazing. He really brought out an incredible script, a great character for me to play. So many different levels of emotion…a physically demanding role. You know, he's awesome as a director, as a writer. I'm so glad to know him and so grateful that he gave me this opportunity."
Is he collaborative? Does he allow you to play with the words?
Odette Yustman: "Absolutely. I sat down with him and certain things that I didn't feel I would say, he was like, 'Change it. Change it. Do whatever. Let's make it work,' so he was really nice that way."
