Mark Wahlberg - 'Max Payne' in Max Payne
So it's based on a video game but do you have to know the video game to understand the movie?
Mark Wahlberg: "No, no. I play a homicide cop whose wife and kid were brutally murdered so that's all I need to know."
How do you get into that? I mean, it's obviously going to be a lot of action but it's going to be a lot of mental stress too, right?
Mark Wahlberg: "Yeah, well especially coming off The Lovely Bones before this. But at least I was finally able to get some revenge. I don't play a physical character in Lovely Bones. I play an accountant whose daughter disappears, so to be able to finally get some revenge and act out on some people was nice."
You've done action movies before but what sets this one apart as far as the action scenes go?
Mark Wahlberg: "Oh, well John [Moore, the director] is an extremely demanding guy. We didn't get to use a lot of the tricks that we would normally use – cables, stunt people. I had a couple of guys that looked just like me, but they only used them when absolutely necessary. But it's great. It's tough doing it but once it's done and it's on film, you have something you can be proud of. You can complain about it while you're shooting it, but then you actually try to brag about it when it's over."
The game itself is a third-person shooter so how does that change for the movie?
Mark Wahlberg: "Well, you have to see it. You have to see it."
And the tone of it?
Mark Wahlberg: "Yeah, it's very stylized but it's also reality based. And then there's some mystical elements…it's hard to explain. But it's quite cool."
And women are going to like it to?
Mark Wahlberg: "Yes, I think. Well, this guy is driven by emotion, you know? I didn't play the kind of man of few words. This guy is very energetic, doesn't mind raising his voice, getting emotional, whatever he has to do."
Was he an easy guy to find?
Mark Wahlberg: "Yes. There's a lot of me in this character."
