Matthew McConaughey – 'Connor' in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past

What was it about this one that made it one you wanted to do?

Matthew McConaughey: "One, it really was a great script. When you see the movie you hear it's got more clever dialogue in it than most romantic comedies do. It's also got a strong male voice the first 30 minutes where you get to hear stuff come out of Uncle Wayne's mouth – Michael Douglas – and stuff come out of my character's mouth in the first 30 minutes that is really like almost Wedding Crashers comedy. It's abrasive and you're like usually in romantic comedies you don't have dialogue or characters that cut that deep that early in the movie. And then to get to a third act and recover and have our man and our woman get together, we have this element of ghosts that come in the movie. So the ghosts sort of allowed the comedy to really be heightened. It broke out of reality. So, my guy gets the you know what scared out of him and it shakes his floor, and comes out just happy to have survived and really wanting to change his path in life. And the fortunate thing is that the woman that really cares about him and that knows him really well and that he cared about is still there. And in that way it's about second chances. So it's part big fairy tale, had a great romance, but also had some really abrasive, cutting humor that I thought was really brave and kind of ballsy for a movie like this."

Has there been that moment in your life where you've clicked and you know that you need to change things like this guy does?

Matthew McConaughey: "No. This guy had an abrupt, about face change because, like I said, ghosts visit him and shake him up and scare the hell out of him. No, I'm much more of a merge guy, and turn the pages. But already things in my life this year there's places where you turn the pages but all of a sudden it's a new chapter. I got a new chapter right now in my life with the family and things like that, you know? But not any sort of conscious, 'Okay, now it's time.' I'm not a big sort of signpost guy with things like that. I'm about to turn 40; I don't really see that as like a, 'Oh my god, I've got to do this.' No, I kind of roll with it a little bit more. We'll work hard at it. I've still got a lot of relationships and doing the same things that I have been working on for 39 years, so that feels good – whether it's family or friends or job – to feel it all still connected from 39 years ago, things that I started 20 years ago, friends that I met 25 years ago that are still here tonight. Things like that."

How's The Grackle coming?

Matthew McConaughey: "The Grackle's coming good. 'Two hundred bucks, if your guy's messing around I'll give him a beat down.' It's a good one."

And the production company's doing well?

Matthew McConaughey: "j.k. livin is doing really well. We had an hour fundraiser for the foundation – j. k. livin foundation earlier. Raised a bunch of great money for these afterschool programs we've got. The record company, we put out Mishka's record 'Above the Bones.' It held at number two on the reggae billboard charts for seven weeks. We're about to surpass the sales of the very first album that he had put out in a much shorter time. Mishka's actually supposed to be here tonight. He played Surfrider Foundation yesterday. The brands on www.jklivinstore.com are selling great. We're coming up with four new products this week. And the film production's doing well. We're just getting into TV. Sold two things to TV. We're going have a couple of TV series' that we're working on."

And Lincoln Lawyer is coming up, too?

Matthew McConaughey: "Lincoln Lawyer, yeah. We've got to get the right director and then we're off on that."
