Mark Wahlberg ('Max Payne')
How is the action in this different than other action movies you've done?
Mark Wahlberg: "Oh, this is action times 10. I mean the level of intensity is just off the charts. And then especially the third act… This pharmaceutical company has created this drug for the military to make soldiers more aggressive in combat, and I have to take it in order to survive. And I go bananas, so it's every character I've played times 10."
How do you gear up for that?
Mark Wahlberg: "Well, you know the character's driven by emotion. His family's brutally murdered so that's enough to make me go bananas. I have to imagine something horrific happening to my family. It's not a fun place to go but that's what it takes to get there."
Was it an easy place to leave?
Mark Wahlberg: "It is, yeah. No, as soon as I'm done, I'm not looking back. It's like jail for me. Once I'm out the door, I'm not looking back."
Do you have to know the video game to understand these characters?
Mark Wahlberg: "It was important for me to check it out. I think the script did a pretty good job of giving me the essence of the character and that world, you know? But, you know, any time someone tells me something's based on a video game, I need to check it out and make sure that I'm on the right page. "
Was it a lot of practical effects or CGI or a combination?
Mark Wahlberg: "No, we shot most of it on film. Aside from the blowing up the building and the actual demons, it's all real. John Moore is a very, very talented guy. He actually doesn't care about my well-being all that much. But it was well worth it. A couple bumps and bruises here and there, but we're very proud of the end result."
There's a sequel to the video game. Is there going to be a sequel to the movie?
Mark Wahlberg: "I don't know. I've never done a sequel before so it would take a lot. It would take a lot. We'll see. And I don't mean a lot of money. I mean make it better than the first. They've been trying to make a couple of movies that I've done into sequels. We'll see."
Is this a movie that's going to appeal to both sexes or is this mainly for guys?
Mark Wahlberg: "You know what? You'd be surprised. Based on the character being driven by emotion, I think what females I know that have seen the movie have really enjoyed it. So, we'll see."
