Inside Devil with M Night Shyamalan
How do you do this and not want to direct this?M Night Shyamalan: "You know what? It is strange. I don't really have an answer for that, because I thought that was going to be much more painful than it was. Because the criteria for the idea to be in The Night Chronicles is that it has to cause pain when I make the decision that I'm going to give it to somebody else. If it comes too easy, then I know I'm not giving anything of value. It has to hurt me. And so as I made the decision to give Devil over, I was like, 'Are you sure you want to do this? You know, I should direct this movie.' I remember when I pitched it to the studio they were like, 'Do you want to direct it?' And I was like, 'No, that's not the idea here. We're going to find some amazing filmmakers.' I remember I hesitated for a second, but after that point it's been amazing because I got to work with filmmakers that I love. They get to teach me stuff, which is like the whole point of the whole thing because you can get too in your own style too much, you know? You learn from other people, all their different strengths and how you can fill up your game a little bit better. I'm using sports analogies there. So yeah, it was... Maybe it won't all be like this - the other movies - but this one was kind of picture perfect. I believe in these guys; they delivered a great movie. I'm so proud to have my name on it. I mean, I hope I can say that every time."
Have you definitely decided that Resurrection is the next one? [Note: For some reason I'm stuck with Resurrection in my head and even after Shyamalan says Reincarnate, Resurrection keeps wanting to come out. Maybe that should be the name of his third Night Chronicles film.]
M Night Shyamalan: "Not Resurrection, Reincarnate."
And is it going to be Daniel that does it?
M Night Shyamalan: "That is - Daniel Stamm - so I'm really excited. Yeah, we saw Last Exorcism. The test is if when we're watching their movie if freak out a little bit, and we freaked out a lot when we watched that."
So was it the Poughkeepsie Tapes from the Devil filmmakers?
M Night Shyamalan: "Yeah, exactly. We'd just moved into our [house]. Yeah, we..."
Bhavna Vaswani: "It's awesome."
It scared you too?
Bhavna Vaswani: "I loved it."
M Night Shyamalan: "Well, she's a psychologist and so the movie - I don't know if you've seen it but it's about a serial killer, but it's a bizarre romance in there, like a psychological thing going on with one of his victims. And that totally intrigued her."
Bhavna Vaswani: "Completely understandable from a psychological point of view. Completely correct."
M Night Shyamalan: "Yeah, how you kind of attach with the torturer. It's really wild."
Why haven't people seen that movie?
M Night Shyamalan: "It's so dark, it's so incredibly dark. You know what a feel-good movie is? This is the opposite. It's like that. Whatever you felt about life before, you'll feel less about life after you come out. But it's so effective, you know? I was upset because we saw it in our new house and I was like feeling vulnerable in our new house, which is exactly what I didn't want. I didn't want to watch it."
How many Night Chronicles are we going to see?
M Night Shyamalan: "At least three, so we're going to do three. But I'm thinking of a fourth idea now. There's one that's sitting in my drawer that I'm like, 'Maybe I should direct it." See? That's the first sign."
