Lauren Graham ('Phyllis Kearns')
Lauren Graham: "It's a story about commitment and fighting for what you believe in and not being afraid that your one voice won't be heard. And, you know, that you can be an individual against a corporation or a machine or a conglomerate of any kind and potentially win."
Did you get to talk to Phyllis about this role at all?
Lauren Graham: "No. I know that the director sort of wanted… You know, it's so sensitive when you are dealing with a true story and this wasn't necessarily…they hadn't signed over. I don't know, it was just a delicate relationship. The director really had most of the dialogue and included the family as much as they wanted to be included, and as much as he could. And so near the end of the movie I did get to meet her. But it was different to imagine that someone shared their story with us and then to meet her was a very moving and, I don't know, it was like a really big deal. I had never played a person who existed outside of my mind. "
What attracted you to the role initially?
Lauren Graham: "I thought it was a really cool part for Greg [Kinnear]. Greg was attached and you just kind of think about what the material is and who you are getting to work with. Both things were really interesting to me. And then I sat down with the director and we just really hit it off. I had done my research about the story and the family. It just, I don't know, I think we just saw how to tell the story in a kind of a similar way. And it ended up being one of the best working experiences I've ever had. So, it was good."
When you did that research, did you find anything out that really helped you that wasn't in the script?
Lauren Graham: "Well, you know, the reality of this story had many peaks and valleys. You know, he really didn't stop fighting till the end of his life, so I kind of carried that with me. I just thought where we take a sort of section of time in the movie, it went on. So that was helpful just to think in terms of how committed that man was to his cause. And, you know, to some degree in this family they were losing him to something bigger than themselves. So, yeah, it was helpful ."
