Sara Paxton – 'Mari' in The Last House on the LeftThe last time I talked to you was at a totally different type of movie, Sydney White, and now you're in this thing going through hell. Why?
Sara Paxton: "I got the script and I automatically heard Wes Craven. I was just like, 'He's an icon. I'd love to do a movie with him.' And I just was really looking for something that was different and to challenge myself, and to kind of prove myself a little bit I guess. I never want to really be put in any kind of box of what I can do. And so I just hope people see the movie and they're like, 'Wow, that girl can do serious movies, too.'"
Because you really break out of the box in this one.
Sara Paxton: "The box –it's like, 'Where's the box?'"
How tough was this physically on you and then at the end of the day, how emotionally tough was it for you?
Sara Paxton: "Oh my gosh, definitely the most emotionally and physically tough thing I've ever done in my entire life. I mean, we were all bloody and bruised in real life from doing all the stunts and everything. Emotionally, for myself, I honestly could not have gotten through it without the support of the actors and the crew. Everybody was just so amazing and so respectful, and I loved them. I couldn't have done it without these people here."
So at the end of the day, you had no problem leaving her behind right?
Sara Paxton: "I had no problem leaving that set. Well, I mean, we managed to make it fun. If you watched the bloopers, you're like, 'Why are these people having so much fun on this sad, scary movie?' Like, 'Why are they being so funny right now?' But we had to lighten the mood. You know, you need to release when you're doing something so intense and so serious, so we definitely released. We're all like best friends so we'd hang out every night and talk about our feelings."
That's important. So there was a lot of bonding off the set? And you guys got to hang out in Africa?
Sara Paxton: "Oh yeah in Cape Town, South Africa."
Was that fun?
Sara Paxton: "Oh my god, it was amazing. We were in this whole new place and so we all immediately bonded because we needed each other. We didn't have anybody else. It turns out we all have a lot in common. Africa was just beautiful. If you see the movie, the scenery is just gorgeous. Rocky mountains, clear ocean… We saw giraffes, elephants, baboons, everything, it was great."
Now physically in this you don't look beautiful like you do right now. You were very beat up and gross and disgusting. How was it getting into that every day?
Sara Paxton: "Awesome. Well, the first day I was like, 'Yeah! Pour the blood on! More bruises, more scars.' By day three covered in this sticky blood, it's like being covered in syrup in 70 degree weather all day long, rolling in grass and everything sticks on you. By day four of that I was like, 'Oh my god, this is what I signed up for? Jesus!' It was still fun but it definitely was a challenge. It was hard being that sticky and bloody."
Now that you've done one like this, would you do a horror movie again - although I like to think this is a psychological thriller rather than a horror movie? Would you do another one like this?
Sara Paxton: "I completely agree with you. I would be up for anything. For me, it's all about the role and the script, and that's what stands out to me. If it was the right role and the right script, I would for sure do it."
I just hope you're not punished in the next one, that you get to do something nice.
Sara Paxton: "Or I'm the punisher maybe."
Get your revenge – that would be nice. Maybe that should be the sequel.
Sara Paxton: "You're right. Last House on the Right: Mari's Revenge, I don't know – just throwing it out there. Wes, where are you?"
