Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly – 'Klaatu' and 'Helen' in The Day the Earth Stood Still
This is a classic and people love it, so how much extra weight is that on your shoulders when you're bringing something like that back to life?
Keanu Reeves: "It's a little bit. I don't know if it's extra weight. I mean, it obviously has some expectations but hopefully, you know, we were keen to meet those expectations, and I hope we were successful."
Jennifer Connelly: "I hope so. I mean, you know, the people love it because it's great. The original is great. It really works. It really works and it's a movie that was very much of its time in 1951. And it's 57 years later and, you know, so hopefully we've made a movie that carries forth that sort of framework and you know the ideas of that film and the spirit of that film that speaks to us now and where we are in the world and the way we deal with each other and the way we live on the planet."
That movie was all about the message so is this one all about the message or is it about the effects, the people? What is it about?
Keanu Reeves: "Message and people. People through the message."
Jennifer Connelly: "Yeah. I mean, I agree. I think it's a movie with a lot of spirit. It's about who we are and how we live and how we deal with each other and our families and what we do to the earth and how we talk to each other. You know, it's about all of that. And like the original, there's also really great stuff to look at in it. It's suspenseful and you think, 'Oh my god, what's going to happen? Is it going to work out?' So it's sort of thrilling. And they can do different things with movies now than back then."
How tough is it to play an alien without giving away the fact that he's an alien, and yet not having the quirkiness of like a Starman?
Keanu Reeves: "That was a pretty good performance in Starman. Jeff Bridges was pretty good. Hopefully I'll give a good alien performance. It was a great role."
Jennifer Connelly: "He was great."
Keanu Reeves: "Thank you very much."
Do you approach it as like a human or do you approach it as I am an alien?
Keanu Reeves: "I'm kind of the… I'm in a human body and it's a kind of container. So I kind of pictured Klaatu as being energy contained by this."
