Katherine Heigl - 'Abby' in The Ugly Truth
What have you learned about men?
Katherine Heigl: "I think that I'm not sure that they listen to a damned word out of my mouth. I have to repeat myself at least 10 times a day."
What's one definite dating "don't"?
Katherine Heigl: "Don't not listen! Just don't not pay."
How was it working with Gerard Butler?
Katherine Heigl: "It was amazing. He's a great guy and super full of energy and hilarious. He's got a great big heart and we had a great time."
How much do you miss T.R. Knight [on Grey's Anatomy]?
Katherine Heigl: "A lot. I miss him a lot. It's a little bizarre. I just had to call him this morning and be like, 'Okay, so this is what happened yesterday. This is what scenes we shot. This is how we felt about it.' He was my guy. That's who I went to every day when I wanted to vent or I wanted to share or I wanted advice, so I just call him now. It's not the same."
Screenwriters Karen McCullah Lutz and Kirsten Smith
You're familiar with romantic comedies but this one is R-rated, a little edgier. Is that kind of fun to play with?
Karen McCullah Lutz: "Very fun because we are raunchy, foul-mouthed girls and we finally got to be ourselves on screen."
Kirsten Smith: "And we don't have to censor as much. I mean usually we're in PG-13 so we have to change it up and find euphemisms for certain words, and now we just get to say those words."
Karen McCullah Lutz: "We would pitch jokes and I'd be like, 'No, I'm just kidding. We can't use that.' I'm like, 'Wait a minute...we can use that in this one.'"
How did you know where to take the comedy in this? Were you worried about pushing it too far?
Karen McCullah Lutz: "I don't think we ever worried about that. We just went for it. We went as dirty as we could be in certain points and then as romantic as we could be in other parts. We just kind of went for what we were feeling."
Was it tough to write from that male perspective?
Karen McCullah Lutz: "We know a lot of dudes. We've been hanging out with dudes all of our lives."
Kirsten Smith: "Too many. All this research has got to pay off somehow."
Karen McCullah Lutz: "I've got a dude posse that ranges from like sane and stable to belligerent, so it's like I know everybody in between. There's nothing a guy can do that would surprise me at this point or shock me."
John Michael Higgins - 'Larry'
You always crack me up in every single movie. This time they let you run free again with improv, right?
John Michael Higgins: "Oh yes. Well they hired me and Cheryl Hines and neither one of us are daunted by the notion of improvisation, so we jumped right in - mostly because we were too lazy to look at the script. If I would just take a few more minutes every day in the trailer to just read the lines, then I might actually say them. I almost never do. I don't know why."
And no one says anything?
John Michael Higgins: "No, they don't. I sort of make it up as I go along and that seems to be fine."
They must be used to that from you.
John Michael Higgins: "I think that's why they hire me. I don't even know why that should be. But I haven't said a word that was actually in the script for at least 10 years now."
This one's an R-rated comedy and most of the stuff that you get to do is more PG-13, right, usually?
John Michael Higgins: "No, no. You should see me without the fancy Hugo Boss suit. It's not so R-rated."
Cheryl Hines - 'Georgia'
You love to improv so this one must have been right up your alley.
Cheryl Hines: "Yes, it was right up my alley. It was fun. It was a lot of fun. Robert Luketic let us improvise a lot, Michael Higgins and I, and we had a lot of fun doing that."
John said that he never read the script, not once. Not one word from that script.
Cheryl Hines: "It is amazing how much Robert let us improvise. He would just let us improvise our news cast, improvise our scenes. It was really nice."
What's the worst dating advice you've ever heard?
Cheryl Hines: "Be yourself. Don't ever be yourself. Only bad things can happen."
