Karl Urban - Priest

This one you're definitely a villain, right?

Karl Urban: "I'm definitely a villain in this piece, but fallen hero would be another way of describing it."

You're never satisfied in just saying it's a villain, are you?

Karl Urban: "You know what? I just don't believe in black and white. I think that it's too easy to box people and characters. As in life, there;s so much more to everything than meets the eye."

Tell us about your character.

Karl Urban: "Well, I play a character who is called Black Hat and he is a fallen hero. He's a warrior priest whose job it was to protect humanity from the vampire threat. He falls in battle. Everybody thinks he's lost but actually he gets transformed into a different entity, something that hasn't existed in this world before."

Is there a specific fighting style that you adopt?

Karl Urban: "Yes. We're all endeavored to, we all worked on a martial arts style for these characters."

And yours was different than let's say Paul Bettany's?

Karl Urban: "No. The priests all had the same martial arts background. Some had different skills, but it's basically all founded in the same."

What sets this, because it's a vampire movie, apart from all the other vampire movies?

Karl Urban: "Well I don't think it's actually quite accurate to describe it as a vampire film. There are vampires in it, but it's really so much more. It's actually a post-apocalyptic futuristic Western. It's set in a time where there's been centuries of cataclysmic war. The earth has been annihilated and the humans have retreated into these walled cities under the protection of the church. It's spookily cool."
