Julie Benz – The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day and Dexter
I'm just now catching up on Dexter. I saw season one and season two, but I hear four is the best. Is that true?
Julie Benz: "It is."
Why?
Julie Benz: "Because it's the season that's premiering next Sunday! I say every season is the best. Every season really is the best that year. This season we have John Lithgow that joined our cast and I mean it's just amazing to be part of a show that attracts such high caliber talent. Like Jimmy Smits last year and John Lithgow this year, I think it blows us all away."
That writing is phenomenal. When you get those scripts, what's your reaction?
Julie Benz: "Well this season I'm starting to suspect that one of our writers is a real serial killer. I have it narrowed down to three because there's no way that darkness can live and someone not really be a serial killer. That's how dark our scripts are."
Do you think there are people like Dexter out there that work for a police agency?
Julie Benz: "I hope not."
Wouldn't that be terrible?
Julie Benz: "Yeah. Actually, though, is he doing good or is he doing bad. See there's the dilemma."
What do you think? Is he doing good or is he doing bad?
Julie Benz: "I think that's a question you have to answer for yourself and I don't want to influence anybody's opinion on it. It's a question that I struggle with. Killing is killing, so when is killing justified. And I would rather everyone think about it themselves than give an opinion on it because I have no idea."
How tough is it to play opposite a character who is repressed and doesn't share his emotions? How tough is it for you as an actress to play opposite someone who's trying to do that?
Julie Benz: "Michael [C Hall] plays him so brilliantly. But as a character I always view Rita as she's the tugboat in the relationship. I think we've all had relationships where you're the one kind of pulling the other one along. And so I've always just imagined Rita as the tugboat. I mean, she kind of has to let him know what the next step is. And it can get frustrating, and she does get frustrated in moments. But that's true to life, so that's how I look at it as. I'm not supposed to know he's covering anything."
And you've got Boondock Saints 2.
Julie Benz: "October 30th."
Can you believe how many fans want that movie? They are aching for that movie to come out.
Julie Benz: "I'm aching for it to come out because I think it's going to be… I've seen it and it's amazing. It's a fun action comedy. I love my character. I play somebody completely different than anybody I've ever played. She's a Southern kick-ass FBI agent. She's a total bad ass. She's not a love interest, not a victim. She's smarter than everybody else. She's sexier than everybody else. She takes the guys on toe-to-toe. And I just don't think we have enough of that out there. To see a woman who's not a love interest, not a victim, not a wife. She's one of the guys and still feminine. I wear six inch stiletto heels for the whole thing."
