Director Eric Brevig
It's your first feature film as a director and you tackle something that's 3D and huge like this. Why did you do that?
Eric Brevig: "I wasn't thinking clearly, obviously. But, you know, I have a background in visual effects and in 3D so I thought, 'I better do something really good my first time out. I'm going to use all those skills.' And luckily I hired three excellent actors and we have a great movie that's a crowd pleaser, and not because of the visual effects and the 3D because it's a good story."
That's the most important part, right?
Eric Brevig: "It's actually the truth. If you're along for the ride because you care about the characters in it, all the other stuff is amazing eye candy, that makes it that much more special."
Now that you've done something like this where it's 3D and this new technology, is it going to be hard to go back and do a regular film that's not?
Eric Brevig: "It'll be a little calm. I don't know if I'm going to go back and do a regular film that isn't. I like doing these kinds of big deal things, and audiences seem to really respond to them."
And the technology is there now to really bring people into the story?
Eric Brevig: "It absolutely is. This movie plays in 2D also and it's a great story. Audiences like it just the same as they like it in 3D. But if you can see it in 3D, you put on the glasses, it's like being involved actually there in the story with them. It's just like another dimension of enjoyment."
Producer Charlotte Huggins
What interested you in bringing this story back to life on the big screen?
Charlotte Huggins: "Doing it in 3D. Making Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D was kind of a goal of mine because you really in a 3D movie want to bring people into some magical place that they've never been, and this movie does it like no other movie can."
Tell me about the technology because it is totally different than anything we've seen before in a live action film.
Charlotte Huggins: "Oh, yes. You've got to see the movie. It's really fun. What happens is you put the glasses on and instead of sitting in a movie theater watching a movie, you feel like you're in the movie. You feel like you're actually falling and that you're actually part of the movie."
And funding-wise, is it more expensive to do something this direction?
Charlotte Huggins: "It's a little bit more expensive. Yes, it is. It costs a few million dollars more because you have to have a second camera and you have to do all of your post-production in 3D. But at the end of the day it's worth it because audiences get something they don't get at home."
Would you do another 3D project like this after doing this one?
Charlotte Huggins: "Oh yes, I'm already involved in projects. I can't talk about them yet great projects. And it's really fun to put people in places, so it makes for a completely different kind of storytelling."
