Josh Hutcherson – 'Steve' in Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant

So you're in a movie with vampires and freaks and you don't get to be either one?

Josh Hutcherson: "No. Well, I'm vampaneze in the movie. Vampaneze…see, it's confusing because we have vampires and vampaneze in our world. And vampaneze are basically really bad ass vampires. They do whatever they want whenever they want, and they're just the rulers of the world."

But you start off as a normal kid?

Josh Hutcherson: "Start off as a normal kid, but then slowly turn to the dark side."

Your guy is never a good guy to begin with.

Josh Hutcherson: "No. He starts off on the wrong path and just goes farther south from there."

You never play characters like that.

Josh Hutcherson: "I know, it's awesome. I loved it. I read the script, there's a whole bunch of different characters in there and I was like, 'I want that guy,' because he's so different and so what I'm not, which is really cool."

Did you read these books at all?

Josh Hutcherson: "I didn't. My little brother did. My little brother and my grandma both read them. It's a wide demographic."

Is that what the movie's going to attract too?

Josh Hutcherson: "Grandmas. We're very big into grandmas. We're hitting up the shopping network a lot with ads. No, it's definitely like a teenage [film]."

Did you sign on to two or three of them?

Josh Hutcherson: "Yeah, we signed on to a few. You know, they're waiting to find out what this one does and how the fan following is for this. But, yeah, I'm signed on for a couple."

Well, with the vampires – everybody loves vampires now.

Josh Hutcherson: "Yes. I'm excited to be a part of that. Vampire's are so hot right now. It's like a phenomenon that's going on, so it's cool to be a part of it."

Are you into vampires?

Josh Hutcherson: "I'm totally into vampires. My favorite movie of all time, scary movie-wise, is The Lost Boys so I'm waiting for a movie to stand up to those standards. Not one vampire movie of modern day has done it yet for me. I'm waiting."

No Twilight for you?

Josh Hutcherson: "See, I like Twilight but it's more like a love story with like the vampires as a catalyst. The Lost Boys is just awesome."

Are you filming Red Dawn right now?

Josh Hutcherson: "I'm working in Michigan. I'm in Michigan right now."

And how's the weather there?

Josh Hutcherson: "It was 35 degrees this morning when I left and it snowed when we were filming last night."

So you're playing the C Thomas Howell role?

Josh Hutcherson: "Yes, I'm playing Robert. He was C Thomas Howell in the original."

That's a juicy role.

Josh Hutcherson: "Yes, it's great."

How's it going to compare to the original in tone?

Josh Hutcherson: "The tone, I think it's going to be a little more gritty than the original one. We have the director who did second unit for all the Bourne Identity movies, so that's shot in a nitty-gritty kind of way. So it's going to be a little more down and dirty like that. But the heart of the story's still there. My character has a really great arc, like the original did. He starts out kind of like shy…not shy, but the tech guy kind of, not really out there. But then by the end he's just full on."

How close to being done are you?

Josh Hutcherson: "We are about a third of the way through, so we're filming until December."

More Journey to the Center of the Earth in the future for you?

Josh Hutcherson: "Yes, there is, actually – next summer."

Where are you going to go? Do you know yet?

Josh Hutcherson: "I think it's either Hawaii or Costa Rica, but it's going to be a mystery island. That's what it's all about."

Are you ready to be back in that character again because that was a fun one, right?

Josh Hutcherson: "It's such a fun character. 'Sean' was really cool and getting to work with Brendan [Fraser] was a lot of fun, and hopefully we get the same director back in there so it'll be a good time."
