Splice Writer/Director Vincenzo Natali
The big day is almost here where it's going to get a huge release. Are you ready for this?Vincenzo Natali: "No, no I'm not ready for this. I don't think anyone could be because this is so far outside of the box. This is so far beyond the expectations that we had for the film, but of course it's incredibly gratifying. And this movie, in a sense, is like my child. And to have it accepted on this scale means a tremendous amount. I feel like a very proud parent right now."
The end of it leaves it open that there's possibly a sequel - without giving anything away. Have you done anything on that yet?
Vincenzo Natali: "No, no I haven't. I mean people will vote with their feet. If they want to see a sequel, they'll show up. If they don't, they won't - and that's okay. I didn't really plan this movie to have a sequel. I ended it in an open way because I felt that was the right way to end this story, and not as a means to get another movie going. But I have also decided that if there is a demand for the Splice sequel, that I will rise to the challenge and I will do a Splice sequel."
Have you thought at all about where you would take it?
Vincenzo Natali: "I thought a little bit about it. I mean I think that the main thing in a sequel, in my mind, in any good sequel is to evolve from the first film, not to just repeat the first movie. So whatever it is, I would hope that it would be something that would carry the story to slightly new territory and not just try to mimic the first one."
Well that's what's so good about Splice in the first place is that it is so original. You take so many chances, so many risks with the storytelling. Was there ever a point that you questioned whether audiences would watch it because of where you took the film?
Vincenzo Natali: "Oh, yeah. Lots of people told me no one is going to watch it because of where I'm taking this movie, so I didn't even have to think it. But that's why I wanted to do it. That was its raison d'etre and that's what made the 12 year journey worth it. But it's funny, you know they say that studios look backwards and filmmakers look forwards. In my mind, that's my duty as a filmmaker is to try and put things on the screen you haven't seen before. That's my obligation."
What are you going to work on next?
Vincenzo Natali: "No, it's not for me to decide, as usual. I'm working on a number of things and hopefully they'll all happen. But I honestly couldn't tell you what will be next."
Splice Producer Joel Silver
You guys actually picked this one up. You don't pick up movies so why did you pick up this one?Joel Silver: "I saw the movie and I was really intrigued with it. I liked it a lot, I thought it would work so here we are."
It takes a lot of risks.
Joel Silver: "Yeah, but all movies are risks. It's always a risk. But this was good and we were able to do this with our deal with Dark Castle and Warner Bros, so we did it and I'm very proud of it."
And it's getting a June 4th release and it's a little tiny film.
Joel Silver: "It's not so little tiny. It was financed by Gaumont. I mean, it's more than you would think but it's not a big, expensive movie. But it's got a lot of visual effects and it's really, really good."
And when you saw it, you didn't make him make any cuts to it? He gets to release his cut?
Joel Silver: "What we did is we finished the movie with him. He wanted to make some more changes, so we supported that."
Did you really sign on a Logan's Run director? Are we actually underway on that one?
Joel Silver: "Looks like it. We're working a deal now with this young director, this very talented young director Carl Rinsche. He really is excited about it and so are we, so we'll see what happens."
There's so much buzz around him, but he hasn't done a feature film yet.
Joel Silver: "That's right. This may be his first one. He's got something else at Universal which is close but we'll see what happens."
How soon do you think you're going to get underway?
Joel Silver: "I don't know. We've got to write a script; we have things to do so it's not immediate but it's going to be soon."
What's happening with Lobo?
Joel Silver: "I want to make that, too. That was kind of going along a really good path and it kind of got... Guy Ritchie was going to do that but then he had to go back and do the sequel to Sherlock Holmes which is really important, too, so we'll see what happens."
I can't wait to see the sequel. Do you know where you're going to take it?
Joel Silver: "We're on that now."
Is Jude Law going to be back?
Joel Silver: "Of course."
