Joel Edgerton - Voice of 'Metal Beak' in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
What's it like to play an evil owl?Joel Edgerton: "It's awesome."
Is it?
Joel Edgerton: "Yeah, it's awesome to be the bad guy."
Did you get in touch with your inner bad guy for this?
Joel Edgerton: "Yeah, I think I've definitely got it in me. I want to bring it out more in the future."
Voicing an owl, did you do any research on your own to see what an owl moves like or anything like that?
Joel Edgerton: "No. Really, our job is just to kind of, I guess, personify the animals that are in the story, you know? The real legends, I guess, in my mind of a movie like this are the animators. They're the ones who bring it to life, and I guess our job is just to add that extra spice which is to personify them."
Have you seen it yet?
Joel Edgerton: "I've seen sections of it, but I'm going to sit and watch the whole thing today."
Did they use any of your facial movements or anything for your owl?
Joel Edgerton: "Oh, I hope not. It's quite funny because when I do animation stuff, I get a little bit sort of possessed by it. I wouldn't like to see the video footage of me doing my animation."
You really get into it.
Joel Edgerton: "I get a little bit into it, yeah. In fact, to the point where I heard that they played a little bit of me doing my voice at the wrap party. And I was like, 'I'm so glad I wasn't there.'"
Maybe that's the bonus feature for the DVD. It's all going to be you.
Joel Edgerton: "I hope not. There's a whole new movie in that."
What about The Thing? How did that go?
Joel Edgerton: "The Thing is awesome. I've got great hopes for that movie. It's coming out, I think, at the end of April in 2011, so not too far away. We had a great time shooting it. I think it's a really great take on a redo of that movie as in the prequel that we've done."
It's not a remake in any way.
Joel Edgerton: "It's not a reboot or a remake or a re-whatever. It's a prequel. It concerns itself with sort of the mysterious question of what happened to the Norwegian camp. For the fans of the original film, who will know all about that, it answers a lot of those questions."
But do you have to have seen the original film to get this film?
Joel Edgerton: "No. I think that's one of the special things of this version of The Thing is that you can watch it with no prior history of the film, the Carpenter film or the other film. You can watch it anew. Or there will be extra value in it for anyone who is familiar."
