Jim Sturgess - Voice of 'Soren' in Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
Talk about playing Soren, the hero owl.Jim Sturgess: "Yeah, it was fun to play. It was like nothing I've ever done before because it's not like making a normal film, you know? You just kind of turn up. You don't have to get picked up at 5 o'clock in the morning and get dragged through make up. So I could kind of look however I wished to look. But I mean it was...essentially it's still the same job. You have to tell a story through acting, and playing Soren was - he was a reluctant hero, which is always exciting to play. And he's a dreamer and a believer and has so much enthusiasm and determination, he was a really fun character to go through with using your voice only. That's all you have."
Well, that's it - you get to just use your voice. Did you find yourself doing different movements and stuff trying to be an owl?
Jim Sturgess: "I was like flapping my arms constantly."
Were you?
Jim Sturgess: "I would hate to watch the video footage of me pretending to be an owl. We had to do these like huge battle scenes I remember, and I was just kind of going through this whole battle scene just flapping my arms and jumping up and down, just trying to get into the spirit of it, you know?"
So it's not just a kids' movie?
Jim Sturgess: "Definitely for everybody, yeah, yeah, yeah. Which is why I was so excited to be involved in it because it's not cute cute. You know, it's not just a cartoon. There's some really kind of solid issues that are brought up whilst you're watching the film. But it's fun as well. It's a really exciting journey that these owls kind of take, and it's action-packed and there are these amazing battle scenes. I mean I haven't seen the film yet so I don't know, but from what I've seen... And just to have Zack [Snyder], a director like Zack and the sort of films that he's done be able to work in this kind of area is a really exciting match."
