Video:Jena Malone Interview - Sucker Punch

with Rebecca Murray

Rain forced the world premiere of Warner Bros Pictures' 'Sucker Punch' to be held in a giant tent, but that didn't stop the stars of the film - including Jena Malone (who was suffering from a cold) - from hitting the black carpet to chat up the film.

Jena Malone - 'Rocket' in Sucker Punch

Zack Snyder is really great at directing men, but he doesn't usually have that many women in his films. How is he around all you ladies?

Jena Malone: "I didn't see any difference between the way he directed men or women. He's just so comfortable and free-flowing, and just makes everyone feel so at ease that it really feels like a family environment, you know?"

You guys went through so much training but you also had to wear these tight costumes while you're doing all that action. Was that difficult?

Jena Malone: "It was difficult the first time, but luckily we had such a collaboration between Michael Wilkinson who was the costume director and the stunt choreographer Damon Caro that we'd put them on and I'd say maybe like, 'I want this strap. And this one needs to be rubber, and this one can be wood.' And it was really fun to be able to build it up to feel like it's the best that it could be and also the safest, and the best for my performance as a stunt performer."

I watched the trailers and I'm not sure of the genre. What is it?

Jena Malone: "It blows genres to pieces. It's like a surrealistic action adventure. I mean, when was the last time you saw that? Particularly with young woman."

It's nice to see women get to take on these action roles. Did you guys do it all yourselves or [were there] a lot of stunt performers...?

Jena Malone: "Lots of stunt work but you know we got to do everything. We got to try it out and, you know, if they brought someone else in for the very specific little things. But I think what you really realize is that it's so presumptuous to be like, 'I do all my own stunts,' because stunt performers, they train for years and years and years. What I learned in three months is incredible, but if I kept doing that, then I'd really be able to push myself. I loved it when she'd come in. I learned so much about her form and how she took rolls. It was really cool."
