Mark Webber - 'Stephen Stills' in Scott Pilgrim vs the World

How difficult was it to be the killer guitar player in this?

Mark Webber: "It was very difficult. I had no experience in being in a band or playing guitar or singing. I had to have guitar lessons and vocal lessons. It still was a challenge being able to sing and play the guitar at the same time."

Is it really that tough?

Mark Webber: "For me it was. You know, I don't think for real musicians, but for me it was. Ultimately I felt like I got good with the singing but the guitar's still an issue. I learned how to fake it really well."

This is a really bizarre movie. How would you describe the tone to somebody who had never picked up the graphic novel?

Mark Webber: "It's like a rom com action musical. It's a mash-up. It's genre-bending. I mean it's like one second you're watching this simple little love story and then it breaks out into a video game. I mean, I've never really seen anything like it and I think it's really amazing."

Were you familiar with Bryan Lee O'Malley's work?

Mark Webber: "Yeah, I was. I knew it. I think that he's incredibly talented and has such a devoted, loyal fan base. It feels good to feel we did right by them. That was very important to all of us."

Was that an extra weight on your shoulders knowing that he has such a devoted fan base and that you had to get it right?

Mark Webber: "Yeah, definitely. I think that when anything's ever adapted into a film from your favorite book or comic book, you bring that extra pressure to whatever you're doing."

What did you guys do to bond because you had to be a tight team in this?

Mark Webber: "Oh, it was. I mean we're still super close. We had a month of band practice together. Me, Alison [Pill], Johnny [Simmons] and Michael [Cera] every day would get together and play the tunes. We really bonded then."

Jason Schwartzman - 'Gideon Graves' in Scott Pilgrim vs the World

We do not usually get to see you do action, so how much fun was that to do?

Jason Schwartzman: "It was so much fun. Look, this whole experience of acting the last 12 years or 13 years, the whole thing has been surreal. I didn't expect any of it and you know each month I don't expect to keep working. I'm sure a lot of people say that, but I really didn't expect to be sword-fighting 30 feet over the ground. It's so surreal to me and so wonderful, and it was just such a kick-ass, fun time. I loved it."

It's a kick-ass film.

Jason Schwartzman: "Yes, it is. It's fun as shit."

So what was the training like for that?

Jason Schwartzman: "It was lots of sit-ups, medicine ball work, lots of conditioning, Stairmaster, Thighmaster, the usual. A lot of the shake...What's that called? Shake weights? I did a lot of shake weights."

It's my favorite commercial ever.

Jason Schwartzman: "Oh yeah. It's the best. It's like one level off from the full-on porno movie. So I did a lot of Shake Weights, and also sword-fighting practice. Lots of sword-fighting practice, yeah."

This is a huge cast. What did you guys do off the set to bond?

Jason Schwartzman: "We just hung out. You know, I've never really worked on a movie with this large of a cast who are all roughly the same age, so it was such a pleasure. We'd go see movies, hang out, play with our Intendo tapes. It was wonderful."

And what was it like to work with Edgar Wright as a director?

Jason Schwartzman: "It was amazing. I'm a big fan of all of his movies. I've always wanted to work with him. He's enthusiastic, it's like he has no choice but to make this movie. He loves it so much. It's all he wants to do. His enthusiasm, these are the type of people you want to work with - people who really know what they want."
