Jaime King – 'Lorelei' in The Spirit

So does it follow the graphic novel or is it a new story?

Jaime King: "I mean it is a new story. It's different than something you would think because normally the things that have been made of Frank Miller's, like Robert Rodriguez and Frank when we did Sin City, was very like page for page for page the Sin City. And the same thing with 300. But this is, it's the characters of Will Eisner's comic book and in a whole new direction. "

So is it fun to take it somewhere new?

Jaime King: "Yeah, it's great. I mean, there's nobody that knows Will Eisner more than Frank Miller, because he was his mentor and a dear friend of his. So, it's really exciting."

Now this is the first one that Frank Miller's directed all on his own. How is he as a director?

Jaime King: "He's fabulous. I mean he was very instrumental in directing me during Sin City. It was very equal, it was 50/50 on both of them. He just really knows what he wants. I mean, the amazing thing about that is that graphic novels are basically storyboards. You know what I mean? So they've already directed the whole film in their heads, so it really works out."

Do you have to know the history of The Spirit to know what your character's doing in the movie?

Jaime King: "No, I don't think you really necessarily have to know the history of anything to connect to a character, but I think that it does help. I think it helps you get an understanding of the tone and the energy of the piece that you're working with."

Did you go back and do a lot [of research]?

Jaime King: "Yeah, I do. I mean yes and no. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. It depends on whether I think it's going to actually make me feel like I have to copy something. You know, I don't ever want to copy something. If I feel like I'm concerned about watching something that's going to make me copy it, then I just won't watch it."
