Jennifer Garner – 'Anna McDoogles' in The Invention of Lying

This one's different from most comedies. What set it apart for you?

Jennifer Garner: "What set it apart to me is that it has this whole philosophical question that it asks. Imagine a world where there's no creativity, where there's no imagination, and where no lie or edit button has ever existed."

Can you actually imagine a world like that?

Jennifer Garner: "No, I don't want to. It's harsh and grey and hateful, and what would the world be? There'd be no art and there'd be no, in this world, Ricky and Matt Robinson – the co-writer and co-director – they believe that there then would be no religion. So that's an interesting thing to just start a conversation."

What was Ricky like on the set?

Jennifer Garner: "Hilarious. The best laugh in the world. If he laughs at you, your day is made."

And did he bust up often during it?

Jennifer Garner: "100% of the time."

And you never did?

Jennifer Garner: "No, of course I did. How can you work with him and not bust up?"

Louis C.K. – 'Greg' in The Invention of Lying

How do all those decades of stand-up prepare you for being in a Ricky Gervais film?

Louis C.K." "Ricky's a guy who just likes funny, you know? So he saw my stand-up and that's why he put me in the movie. I've never really acted so it wasn't anything from that. But, I don't know. You learn a fear of the audience when you're on stage all the time. You learn to respect the crowd and to be there for them. You can't just be quiet and emote. You've got to actually do something. You've got to bring it."

So that translates to the big screen?

Louis C.K.: "I think it does. I hope so. It might not of. Watch the movie because I don't know if I'm any good in it."

So how do you get the best friend vibe with Ricky?

Louis C.K.: "I think we're both kind of wrongful, just bad people. So when people like us find each other, that just laugh at things that nobody should… Like there's some people that all laugh at the same things, you know? Good people connect easily. But guys like me and Ricky are a little bit evil, and so when we find each other it's very rare."

Did you spend all the time on the set just cracking each other up?

Louis C.K.: "Yeah. He laughs all the time during shoot, which I always tell him, 'You know, you're ruining your own movie. It's stupid.' But he can't help having a good time. He's a very infectiously fun guy."
