Transcript: The Incredible Hulk Cast Interviews
Rebecca Murray from About.com Hollywood Movies at the World Premiere of The Incredible Hulk.
Liv Tyler ('Betty Ross')
What was the best part of making The Incredible Hulk?
Liv Tyler: "Best part? I can't pick one. I don't know. I get to be lovers with The Hulk."
Lou Ferrigno ('Voice of The Hulk')
I was a huge fan of the TV series so it's a joy to meet you in person. What do you think of about them doing this movie again, bringing the character back out?
Lou Ferrigno: "I think it's great. I think it's going to be a kick off of the old TV series because they're going back with the original concept. I'm very happy to be doing the voice as well."
This one doesn't do an origin story. It really gets into the action. You don't have to be a huge fan to know what's going on, or will non-fans get it?
Lou Ferrigno: "No, it's going to go back in history. I think it's going to go back more like the comic books and TV series, how The Hulk was born, how he evolutionized, and we understand what the character's all about."
What do you think about Edward Norton playing this character?
Lou Ferrigno: "Great actor. Wonderful, fine actor. He's brilliant for the character, and he cares about the project. He's not just doing it just for the job situation. He reminds me a lot of Bill Bixby."
Did he really? In what way?
Lou Ferrigno: "They're very similar looking. They have the same intensity about themselves. And they're both fine actors."
Tim Roth ('Blonsky')
Why do you think that people are still in love with The Hulk after all these years?
Tim Roth: "Because it's the rage inside. It's like Jekyll and Hyde. It's something that we all feel. And he's a lovable character, in a way. Yeah, he is. The Hulk is actually a reluctant monster. If they'd just leave him alone, then he'd be just fine."
Tim Blake Nelson ('Samuel Sterns')
Tim Blake Nelson: "I think that the notion of becoming angry or excited bringing out this sort of id, is universal. People just connect with it."
And your character will be back in the next one?
Tim Blake Nelson: "That's what they say."
Are you signed on?
Tim Blake Nelson: "Yes, I am signed on."
So you're going to be a total bad guy next time?
Tim Blake Nelson: "Yes, the Leader."
Is that going to be fun to play?
Tim Blake Nelson: "I can't wait."
Peter Mensah ('General Greller')
Were you a fan of The Hulk?
Peter Mensah: "Absolutely. I mean from the early days of watching Lou Ferrigno's work, and actually the comic books themselves, and the greatest thing about this to me is, this is actually the comic book come to life. It's really, really great."
Why do you think people still love the comics and this character?
Peter Mensah: "I think the great thing is Marvel figured out the vulnerability and it's a huge part of why The Hulk actually touches people's hearts. And so hopefully it has as long a life as the original series, so we'll see."
Who do you play?
Peter Mensah: "I play General Greller. I play William Hurt's commanding officer in this."
Are you a bad guy?
Peter Mensah: "No, I'm just an ill-informed guy."
Producer Gale Anne Hurd
So how proud are you of this movie? It's gotten such fantastic buzz.
Gale Anne Hurd: "I am thrilled. I am thrilled because, you know, it was a reboot so you do have people gunning for you saying, 'Maybe it was too soon. Maybe it's just a character that doesn't translate well.' So to get the validation is amazing."
This time you didn't have to tell the origin story so was that more freeing?
Gale Anne Hurd: "It is much more freeing, because the first time you had to go to this psychological backstory. You spend most of the movie getting to the point where Bruce Banner hulks out, and then trying to understand why he's hulking out. Now you can jump forward from that. And we had an opportunity to blend not only the comic books but the television series."
And having Edward Norton come onboard
Gale Anne Hurd: "What can you say? Because he's playing a scientist, you've got an intellect, which Edward very much is. But you also have someone who has that duality that is so important, to have Bruce Banner who has The Hulk inside of him. And from his performances in Primal Fear and Fight Club, you couldn't find a better fit."
So how many more Hulk movies are there going to be?
Gale Anne Hurd: "You know, the fans will tell us and hopefully there will be a new one coming up on the Marvel release schedule."
Edward Norton ('Bruce Banner')
What's the best part of making The Incredible Hulk?
Edward Norton: "Louis and Liv."
