Ken Watanabe- 'Saito' in Inception

What was it like working with Christopher Nolan again?

Ken Watanabe: "He's so honorable and I was really glad to work with him again. I've been working in Hollywood eight years and some kind of small window will be open in my career, so I'm really glad."

How tough were the action scenes for you?

Ken Watanabe: "In this movie it's just [such] strange work for us because, you know, we had tough shooting in the water the whole day. And then floating for a whole day - it is crazy."

When you first saw the script did you understand it?

Ken Watanabe: "I was so confused. I need to go back and read it again three times. And then I got the human drama."

Johnny Marr and Hans Zimmer

You've worked with Christopher Nolan before, how collaborative is that process?

Hans Zimmer: "Totally. I mean here's a weird thing he did to me, but it's so Chris. We spent a year talking. We're friends so we phone each other up, 'Hey, I have an idea...,' that sort of thing. I went to the set, I saw what he was doing, and then when he started actually cutting the movie together he wouldn't let me see a frame of it. He didn't want to inhibit my imagination. He went, 'Go and write me the music for this film.' And then he sort of put it all in and the first time I saw it, it actually was what you hear in the background [at this premiere]."

But it seems like you can't get the right tone if you haven't seen any of it. It's so specific.

Hans Zimmer: "It is so specific but at the same time I do think we talked about it so much, we lived it, you know? We were talking on the phone, I was playing him things and sending him things. Right in the middle of the writing, I started writing this tune actually that's playing in the background and as I was playing it I thought, 'Guitar would be good.' And I thought, 'But only one guy can do it - Johnny Marr.' So I phoned Johnny..."

And you had to say yes right away?

Johnny Marr: "Well, yeah, of course I did. Of course."

Hans Zimmer: "He didn't have to."

Johnny Marr: "I guessed it would be something that I was going to like because of what Hans has done. I came along and it was just beautiful music. Absolutely beautiful. It's quite unusual to have electric guitar in movies a lot. It's a very unusual thing. It's something that's kind of died out somewhat."

Hans Zimmer: "I don't think anybody else could have done it."

Johnny Marr: "Well, well..."

Take the compliment.

Johnny Marr: "I will take it. It was great fun, but it's intense. It's an intense movie and the tune is intense. You know, the score is a very, very emotional score so I wanted to play with as much emotion as it deserved, really. So that was all I had to do, just really feel it and watch the way it's being played which is great because Leonardo DiCaprio - you believe him, you know?"

I saw it last night and I could not believe how intense the love story was. The music was perfect. I don't usually notice the music unless it bothers me, but last night I was really listening to it.

Hans Zimmer: "Thank you."

Johnny Marr: "There's a lot of it as well. It underscores the whole film."

It fits so well.

Johnny Marr: "I think that's to do with, also a lot of that's to do with Hans' and Chris' relationship, their understanding which is a rare thing, I think."

Well it's a lot of trust that's built up.

Hans Zimmer: "I mean, you know we don't have enough time but really honestly we started on the first page talking about what this could be, how to not make this some sort of weird puzzle to make this some emotional flow to the whole thing."
