Director Dave Parker and Sophie Monk - The Hills Run Red

Dave Parker: "What do you want to know?"

Everything, except the ending.

Dave Parker: "Oh, there is no ending. It never ends. It actually doesn't end."

Sophie Monk: "It could keep going."

Dave Parker: "It never ends. No, we worked very hard to make sure there is no ending. It's about a film fanatic who's obsessed with horror films. And he's found this one film that's incredibly obscure. It's basically a lost film that's 20 years old and he's become really obsessed with it to the point where he wants to find out what the mystery is about it. So he tracks down the only living person connected with the film, which is the director's daughter, which Sophie plays. Tracks her down, convinces her – much to her hesitation – to take them back to the original locations where the movie was shot so that they can do this documentary. And when they get there, they find out that the movie has never stopped filming and they become the new stars of the movie."

That sounds spooky.

Dave Parker: "I hope."

Sophie Monk: "It is."

Is it creepy and gory and bloody or is it more cerebral spooks?

Dave Parker" "It's all of the above. It's depraved. It's bloody. It's nasty. It's just wrong, in all the good ways."

Sophie Monk: "The kind of stuff where you go, 'Oh, I can't watch that!' Like not in a horror way in a like, 'That's twisted.'"

You haven't done a horror movie before, have you?

Sophie Monk: "Yeah, I did one before."

Do you like the genre? Is it one that you normally are drawn to?

Sophie Monk: "This one, because the script was so crazy and this character is like a really amazing character for me to do, a real challenge so, yeah. Otherwise, no. I like comedy as well, but this one was different. It was an exception."

So does it leave it open for a sequel?

Dave Parker: "Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely, yeah."

So when you get a script like this with that kind of story, does it immediately grab you? Is it a tough sale?

Dave Parker: "For me, I'm so much like the lead character being a horror fanatic and everything else, and knowing all these movies, growing up with them and everything else, that no, when I read it, I instantly grabbed onto it. We were really lucky. We had a great screenwriter – David Schow – who wrote The Crow with Brandon Lee. It just kept getting more and more interesting and better and better as we made it. And then when we got to shoot it, seeing it all come to life and what the actors brought to it, to me just raised it up to another level so it was really exciting."

Was there ever a time on the set where you almost forgot you're in a horror and actually got scared?

Sophie Monk: "There was moments that he held off on and surprised us and I was just like, 'Keep it together! Keep it together!' But no, it's definitely probably the most twisted scary movie I've seen – and I was in it."
