Greg Berlanti – Director of Life as We Know It
What's the appeal of this? Josh [Duhamel] was saying it's going to make you cry rather than laugh.Greg Berlanti: "I think both, you know? I think it's sort of disarming that way. There's lots of comedy in it and lots of drama in it. It's certainly not afraid to go to both places. You certainly have actors who are gifted at going to both places."
Well, talk about those actors. Could you get two better looking stars?
Greg Berlanti: "Yeah, I know. I would often say it made me feel very inferior to show up to work every day because, you know, 'You're great…and you're talented. Yeah, oh great.' Exactly. God does give with both hands."
You've got a lot of TV credits in the past, so what's the transition like going to films?
Greg Berlanti: "I think it's very similar to showrunning in certain ways in that you're really responsible for creating that creative atmosphere, and the arbiter of the story and really the conductor of the whole environment. So if you're… As a control freak, it's very similar."
Are you a control freak?
Greg Berlanti: "I would say so. I think you have to be to sort of… If you see a story in your head that you're excited about, and you want to get that to the finish line, it's just hard work – like any other skill."
Does that mean that you never let your actors go off script?
Greg Berlanti: "No, no. We definitely let them go off script a lot. In fact, we had a lot of...there's additional supporting actors in the film and we plucked a lot of them from the top improv groups around town in Los Angeles. There were a lot of days I would just let the camera run and let them do their thing. So now we're just sort of tweaking those things in the editing room."
It's going to be tough to choose.
Greg Berlanti: "It is. It is tough to choose, but it's a good position to be in."
And last question, The Flash - are you doing anything yet?
Greg Berlanti: "No. I'm just focused on this right now. You know, just really focused on this. I'm getting Life as We Know It in the kind of shape that I want it to be in."
