Ryan Reynolds - 'Hal Jordan' in Green Lantern
[Right before our interview, Jason Bateman had taken a piece of gum out of his mouth and placed it on Ryan Reynolds' wrist. Reynolds calmly picked it up and started chewing it]
I have to admit that I don't know that much about Green Lantern.
Ryan Reynolds: "Me neither. No, I'm kidding. I know a few things, yeah."
So teach me what I need to know before I see this movie.
Ryan Reynolds: "What do you need to know? It's about an ordinary guy who's bestowed a ring for reasons unknown to him by a dying alien. And he's trying to figure out why this dying alien gave him this ring - there's a specific reason that he was chosen. He was chosen for a very specific film, that's the thing you can find out when you see the film. But he ends up becoming ostensibly an intergalactic space policeman. Yeah."
That's a role you've always wanted to be playing?
Ryan Reynolds: "I don't know if it's that specific."
Is the costume all CG?
Ryan Reynolds: "Well, the costume in the film is actually made of energy so it's not a tactile substance. So what I wore was a motion capture outfit, which was 5 minutes to get into. Not a big deal."
Do you forget about the fact that you're wearing that after a while?
Ryan Reynolds: "Yeah, you do. But people remind you pretty quickly of how stupid you look walking across the parking lot or ordering a cappuccino. That's always an odd feeling."
I've got to point out that Jason Bateman put gum on your hand and then you put it in your mouth.
Ryan Reynolds: "Yes. Well, that's only because we love each other."
Is that what it is?
Ryan Reynolds: "Yes, yes. On the record, right now."
So if some stranger comes up, you won't be doing that.
Ryan Reynolds: "No, no, no, no, no. But I welcome Jason's pre-chewed gum."
