Gerard Butler ('Gerry')
Gerard Butler: "300 was really a push and a stretch, which is also what can be really enjoyable about a movie. Things that you have to earn, so when you finish the movie you know you suffered blood, sweat and tears. Whereas this was a breath of fresh air because it didn't require that. Although I still had to learn to play the guitar and learn an Irish accent, and learn a little striptease. You know, most of those moves were mine - my ex-Chippendale days. But no, it was nice. And I went in there with that attitude that this is light and easy and I'm going to have fun with it. And you know what? It was light and easy and I had fun with it. I wish I could apply that to the rest of my life."
And women are really talking about all the hot men in this movie
Gerard Butler: "I don't want to talk too much about all the hot men that are in the movie because that starts to feel a little weird, me talking about hot men. It is true that there are three men that I've heard women say are pretty hot in the film! And hmm, all right, they're hot! Jeffrey and Harry are so hot! So yeah, I mean there's that, but it's not just that. The themes in this movie are universal, you know? I watched it, I'm a guy, I laughed my ass off and I cried my ass off. Cried my ass off? Can you cry your ass off? I guess. I've got as much positive feedback from the guys as the girls. And I always think with a chick flick, if you go to see a chick flick, you're going to be surrounded by a lot of women. That's why you go to see a chick flick, because you're like, 'Look at her! Look at her! My god, there's hundreds of hot women in this cinema!"
What were you obsessed with in 2007?
Gerard Butler: "What was I obsessed with this year? Meditation, I'll just leave it at that. I needed it."
You get to play an Irish guy and you're Scottish. Why didn't they just switch it to Scotland?
Gerard Butler: "Because, I don't know, that's a good question. Because they wanted to pay for a dialect coach or something. They probably already booked Ireland. No, because the movie was written by an Irish lady. I've got to be honest, even as a Scotsman, I would say the movie that character and that story inherently fits an Irishman and the Irish culture more."
Why?
Gerard Butler: "I just think there's something, you know, something a little more perhaps free and fun and whimsical about the notion of an Irishman, you know? All the drinking, everything, the blarney, the mischief, the music. I mean, Scotland has that but I don't think it's as known for that. It just fit perfectly and even I could see that. I'm not saying the Irish accent was actually easy for me but I would rather do that. I'd rather put in the extra work."
This is a romantic comedy but you have to die in it. Why do you keep doing these types of movies where you're behind a mask, you've got a beard, something's going on? When is it just going to be you and you're going to be alive on the screen?
Gerard Butler: "Because I love making people cry. It's really fun to die. And also, it's like my biggest fear that I'll be in a movie and people will get sick of the sight of me, so I die. It's like, 'There you go! Now you're sorry! Now you wish that you didn't !"
