Would you ever direct yourself again in a role like this?
George Clooney: "Not in this big a role. No, never."
Working with John?
George Clooney: "I don't like him. You're talking about John Krasinski? Actually, we never met. …I smacked him actually. You know, the truth is, John Krasinski, this is his last job. This will be his last job."
Stephen Root ('Suds')
Stephen Root: "There's nothing nice about this character. No, he's a sweetheart of a guy but he's drunk most of the time and asleep, so it was a very, very easy role for me to do."
So you read that on the page and you go, "Oh, well, okay, he's asleep. He's asleep. He's asleep…"
Stephen Root: "He's asleep. He's asleep. He says something and then he goes to sleep. No, anything George wanted to do I was up for it because I so enjoyed working with him on O Brother and would love to do anything else with him."
And working on something that's a screwball comedy with a very specific tone, how difficult is that?
Stephen Root: "It was something I'd aspired to do as a character actor. Something that you really wanted to do when you were coming up because it's fast-talking, funny, and a period piece so you got to dress up in great clothes. You got to do really fast and funny dialogue. It's like doing a great play."
How easy is it to learn to get into that rhythm of doing it so fast?
Stephen Root: "Not hard because you've got – he put a lot of great character actors in this film, including himself. So it was pretty easy and fun."
Christian Scott
Christian Scott: "Basically I play a trumpet player which was very easy for me because I'm a trumpet player. Yeah, it's a beautiful song we play. It's called The Man I Love and they were trying to pick music from the '20s to reflect the period and everything. But the way I ended up getting the role is that George is really good friends with the guys that own my record label. I'm signed at Concord Universal and they sent him the CD. He fell in love with it and said, 'I have to have this guy.' I guess there was a comment made about me being good-looking or something, which I appreciate because I would have to say he's probably one of the most handsome people to ever walk the earth. So that's how I got involved in this."
Wayne Duvall ('Coach Ferguson')
Did you have to do the training or did you miss the boot camp experience?
Wayne Duvall: "Are you looking at me? Do I look like I trained? No, I didn't have to do the training. I kind of showed up and I just kind of watched them, like a coach does. Like a coach does. And coaches back then in the '20s really didn't even call plays or anything, you know? They were kind of like the managers of the team. They weren't allowed to call plays, George's character was. That was the truth of the '20s. Yeah, that's the truth of the '20s. I know, it was very bizarre. So I pretty much just showed up and watched them."
